State Elections Are a Midterm Bellwether

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley easily won the Republican primary contest last night against former state Supreme Court chief justice Roy S. Moore, once regarded as a formidable challenger because of his support from social conservatives who cheered his refusal to remove a monument to the Ten Commandments from the state judicial building.

Riley probably will face Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley, who in early returns in the Democratic primary was burying the comeback attempt of former governor Don Siegelman, who hoped to use a November contest against Riley to showcase his contention that his ongoing corruption trial is a political vendetta by the Republican who unseated him.

The results were among the first to come in a night when primaries and special elections across the nation were being closely watched for signs of the broader political environment that will influence races in this fall's midterm elections.

The contest with the most national significance -- the special election in California to replace imprisoned former representative Randy "Duke" Cunningham in a suburban San Diego district -- was too close to call as polls closed last night on the West Coast.

In the final days of the race, polls showed Democrat Francine Busby in a tight contest against Republican Brian P. Bilbray to complete Cunningham's term in a once-solid GOP seat. A Busby victory in a district where Bush won 55 percent of the vote two years ago would be a clear sign of the headwinds confronting Republicans this fall as they try to keep their 12-year control of the House.

Every single article I've read is negative towards Republicans.

So in otherwords, nothing has changed in our media for the last 100 years. No wonder they are dying an increasingly rapid death.

You folks just don't get it. The MSM is about as dumb as one can come. They keep sinking themselves deeper and deeper and deeper. They actually believe the crap they put forward!!! The David Letterman's, Katie Couric's, Matt Lauer's, David Gregory's, Dana Milbank's, etc. won't get it until the steel blade of terrorism is slicing their throats as they and their families are beheaded. Good news is that no one with half a brain is listening to anything they say except the idiots that call themselves Demcrat Party scum and vermin!!!

No, we get it. That's why I said..."No wonder they are dying an increasingly rapid death." But one thing I don't get is why many Freepers still knee jerk react to every story coming off the AP or Reuters newswires. The first assumption MUST be "this is either untrue or only half the story" with every single thing they write. Any other response is wasted adrenaline.

Ask yourself this question: How could anyone that is endowed with a common sense brain pay one ounce of heed to a moron like Katie Couric? She belongs in a dog show marching her pooch around!!! End of story!!! Ah, CBS will learn they are throwing their money out the window with that airhead of a human being. End of story!!!

I'll see your Katie Couric and raise you 99% of all the other idiots in our media. With the exception of Brit Hume, I've tuned them all out. And don't even ask me to read a newspaper. With the exception of the Home Depot ad insert, I have no need for anything I could find in them.

Everything has happened tonight as I have hoped, as what we have watched tonight is the sun setting on what was the political career of George Wallace II. Incidentally, Wallace's son is not doing that well tonight either, though it looks like that race is going to a runoff and I have to believe that helps Wallace,

Riley has whipped Moore statewide by 65% to 35%. A fairly respectable result, and certainly a better result than the Democrats. More Democrats than Republicans voted in primaries, once again, due to the fact that in Alabama, most rural local races are decided in the Democratic Primary. As opposed to my home county, the state's 2nd most populous, where 68% of people cast Republican ballots, once again, largely due to contentious local races. This is why Roy Moore lost, the people he needed to turnout didn't, and the people who Riley needed to turnout. Never mind the fact Moore ran a lousy campaign.
