Don't think of this as a loss of a dimension. I read the complete article. It sounds to me as if they've figured out means by which they can control the direction in which magnetic energy flows.
With that capability, who knows what could be developed?

It's some kind of crystal effect like a polarizer. This particular substance may have been chosen as one among many substances with metal content; many other substances would also have been tested just to see what happens. 3 K is approximately the background temperature of the universe at microwave frequencies, so this Bose-Einstein condensate is colder.
