The Catholic view is that sex is not a recreational endeavor, but needs to be confined to married couples, with the purpose of procreation. Therefore their stance makes sense. I do not want to see the Church adapting to fit "modern" sensibilities.

Not quite. It is more accurate to state that the Church view is that there should be no artificial breach between the recreational and procreational aspects of marital conjugality. We must always allow for the full openness of giving ourselves to each other.
