Why on earth is it wrong for Libby to disseminate information that acutally corrects the public record?

That's not what I said. And it isn't what Fitzgerald said. Libby says there is no way he would remember something as trivial as Wilson's lies and who he may have spoken to about them. Fitzgerald's reply is that it WAS a part of his job, and one he was actively engaged in - rather than some easily forgotten aside.
