The Democratic candidates for governor went to church on Sunday and prayed for victory, as well they might in a race that is neck and neck heading into Tuesday's primary.
Steve Westly, who made his fortune at eBay, and Phil Angelides, a wealthy former developer, have been battering each other with nasty television ads for several weeks. Analysts say voters may respond to the negativity campaign by not voting.
Westly, the state controller, appeared with Rep. Diane Watson, D-Los Angeles, at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles, which he joined three months ago. He used his moment at the pulpit to quote the bible and urge people to the polls.
Angelides, the state treasurer, attended morning services at Glide Memorial United Methodist Church in San Francisco with Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland.

Angelides spent much of Sunday hitting Democratic strongholds in the Bay Area, including major African American churches like Oakland's Allen Temple Baptist Church and San Francisco's Glide Memorial Methodist Church to reach voters. With Oakland Rep. Barbara Lee at his side, Angelides stressed his education policies, and his efforts to "make California a beacon of hope again" and "a progressive beacon" for working families.

Westly began his day with visits to five Los Angeles-area churches, where he gently nudged prospective voters his way.
At the First African Methodist Episcopal Church west of downtown, he quoted Helen Keller, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Bible, and implored the congregation to vote.
It was clearly the Sunday before election day: Also at the service were Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who is running for insurance commissioner; Board of Equalization member John Chiang, who is running for controller; Reps. Maxine Waters and Diane Watson of Los Angeles, seeking reelection; and Mike Davis, who is running for the 48th District Assembly seat.
"Please go out and vote this Tuesday," Westly said. "People have laid down their lives for your voices to be heard. God bless First AME!"

I've never seen or heard of a first African church. Is this new or do I need to pay closer attention?
The African Methodist Episcopal Church is nearly 200 years old.

LOS ANGELES - In a rare encounter on the campaign trail, Democratic gubernatorial candidates Phil Angelides and Steve Westly found themselves sitting in the same row today at a South Los Angeles church service.
Angelides, the state treasurer, arrived at the morning service at the West Angeles Church of God with Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles.
Westly, the state controller, was with Democratic Rep. Diane Watson, who also represents parts of South Los Angeles.
Both candidates were trolling for African American votes.
Westly scheduled his 8 a.m. church visit earlier in the week. Angelides announced late yesterday he would be at the same house of worship at 7:50 a.m.
Westly said he "had a hunch" his opponent showing up was more than coincidence.
"Mr. Angelides has been following me around the state, and I suspect he'll be following me as I cross the finish line June 6th," Westly said.
Angelides was unavailable to comment, and his aide, Brian Brokaw, did not address the incident directly.
"Phil Angelides is getting a great response from California voters on his tour of the state, with 55 stops planned over the campaign's final 16 days," he said.
After the church service, Angelides headed to San Francisco to greet merchants and attend two Memorial Day weekend barbecues at a restaurant in Oakland and an outdoor event in Sacramento.
He is to give remarks at Memorial Day Services at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes tomorrow morning.
Westly visited other black churches, including the Church of Religious Science in Los Angeles and City of Refuge Church in Gardena, as well as the Evergreen Baptist Church in Oakland.
