her son is able to get a better education than he would in Mexico. And the schools know about but refuse to report the illegals. Happy to have the taxpayer underwrite the education of these illegal aliens though. The teacher union thugs and school administrators compound the insult by continuing to demand higher taxes.

I'd like to see someone asking the question of how to deal with the overstays and why they aren't regularly dealt with.

a) Make it a felony
b) No need for trials and legal delays... not citizens...just cite them and convict them and deport them.
c) No citizenship provided to felons.

The more light on immigration, the more this government stinks like a dead fishing rotting from the head down.

"The little-acknowledged reality is that nearly half the estimated 12 million undocumented foreigners in the United States entered on bona fide U.S. visas" It doesn't matter how they got here, they are here illegally NOW.

"Millions of illegal immigrants in the United States never jumped the U.S.-Mexico border where Congress wants to erect impenetrable walls and President Bush is sending National Guard troops to patrol. They never sneaked in at all.
The little-acknowledged reality is that nearly half the estimated 12 million undocumented foreigners in the United States entered on bona fide U.S. visas and simply never left. Authorities call them "overstays" who have been largely overlooked in the vitriolic debate on immigration.

So secure the Mexican border already, and you promptly stop half the illegals from entering this country.
Not to mention the over 75% of the cocaine here that flows in through the Mexican border.

Confirming those findings or knowing the home country of those who overstay their visas is tricky because U.S. authorities don't track the problem. And the morons in Congress and the White House wonder what we're all so pissed off about!

It's a very large-scale problemRepeatedly things are labeled a problem. But where is the problem described? Here in IT I work beside illegals. What is the problem.
My daughter (of an illegal mother) needed construction workers. She gave affirmative action to seeking citizens and could not find any. The few citizens she found just sub-contracted the work to illegals (including Russian and Polish as well as Mexican). She found it better to contract directly with the illegals than go through the middelmen. The middlemen were the problem.
With unemployment at 4.6% and work being outsourced to India because there just aren't Americans willing and able to do the work, the anti-illegal activists need to do a much better job of shifting the debate from emotional outbursts to a factual description of exactly what is the problem.

It is only a problem for lack of enforcement. No need to go round all of them up. Just put automatic traps in place so eventually they fall into an apprehension system.
A few ways to start solving this...
Put out warrants for their arrest. If they are pulled over for a traffic violation, haul 'em to jail then deport them. No hearing. If the visa stamp in their passport is over the time limit, out they go. If they are doing banking, sieze their assets until they report to INS.
If they come in and they have overstayed their visa, no hearing. Deport them.

Many borrow the social security numbers of legal residents "Borrow" ? If it isn't an offense to use someone else's Social Security number it darn well should be, and a serious one at that.

Just crack down hard on employers and they will deport themselves. We have to fight the reason they are here. The reason is a government who is not enforcing the laws already on the books. And one of those laws are employers hiring illegals. My brother works in the communications business installing wire and their wages are being piushed lower and lower because illegals are being hired at nothing to do the job. All the while my brother has 4 kids to feed.

If the employers paid a better wage they would find the workers. Secondly, they get away with hiring illegals while America foots their education and health costs thru our Emergency Rooms! Thats the problem. Also, what is happening is that employers are boosting their profit margins by taking the money they would have spent on American workers and fattening their own pockets.
I am all about Americans getting rich- but do it legally. Play by the rules everyone else plays by.

There just aren't Americans willing and able to do the work at the low wages companies pay to third world foreigners and illegal aliens.

Kind of nice to not have to pay all of the extra government mandated costs that come with a legal worker, too -- FICA, insurance. No vacation pay, too. /sarc
And don't forget that an employer can pay an illegal substandard wages.
All of this makes a legal worker much less desirable and drives down wages.
