The Media War on Traditional Values
Media Monitor ^ | 6/5/2006 | Cliff Kincaid

The sewer-mouth by the name of Howard Stern once denounced Jack Thompson as a "lunatic lawyer" for getting him kicked off radio stations. Considering the source, this is why this statement is featured as a badge of honor on the cover of Thompson's book, Out of Harm's Way, about the dangers posed by what passes for "entertainment" on television, radio and video games. The book not only describes how Thompson has waged a valiant legal war on those who pollute our culture, it offers evidence of direct harm caused by what children see, read and hear.

SNIP

To the disgrace of American society, Stern, who has since fled to satellite radio, has become something of a cultural icon. It's like he's become the new Hugh Hefner, the modern version of the dirty old man. Stern has even appeared several times on Fox News, supposedly the "conservative" cable channel. Thompson's book would be well worth it if he only dealt with the damage caused by this so-called "King of All Media." Thompson's chapter on "Stern Stuff" examines the disgusting nature of what this creature spews forth. To cite just one example, Stern told his audience shortly after 9/11 that prostitutes should be sent to the rescue workers on their breaks. Much of what Stern says can't even be described without being offensive. What he represents is a sickness and blight on our society.

Thompson's book notes that Stern saw news about the 1999 student shootings in Colorado, including film of students fleeing the school, and commented, "I don't know who's doing this, but I'll tell you one thing. If I were this guy, or these guys, whatever, I'd be sure to bang these chicks before I killed them. Look at some of these broads. They're hot."

Now if we can just ban video games (the reason we have teenage violence) we'll be home free. Or is free the wrong word? hmmmm.

Call me a bluenose. I think Stern saying about the Columbine tragedy: ""I don't know who's doing this, but I'll tell you one thing. If I were this guy, or these guys, whatever, I'd be sure to bang these chicks before I killed them. Look at some of these broads. They're hot." makes him a reprehensible creep.

Stern is not so much a disgrace as is the FCC. The FCC allows cable and satellite television and satellite radio to pass on outrageous programming costs by bundling. Some used to say if you do not like a program turn it off. But it is not that simple, if you do not want to support the likes of Howard Stern then you must not subscribe to Sirius Radio. If you do not like Rush Limbaugh, turn him off. Rush's business model is built on listeners and ratings. Stern's business model like CNN is built on subscribers who must pay for bundled programming whether they use it or not. Howard Stern is a creep, but he is not the boogeyman, the boogeymen are big media who steal money from so called subscribers for services they must pay for, but never use.

Howard Stern once denounced Jack Thompson as a "lunatic lawyer"

In other news, he described the Pope as Catholic and noted that bears defecate in the woods.

Hillary and Illinois Gov. Blagojevich are on the case.

You are free to not like Stern. I don't like him myself. I find him boorish.

But appealing to "what children see, read and hear"? The first refuge of a scoundrel, or someone with a book to sell.

I thought For the Children was copyrighted by the teachers' unions. Or maybe it was the Klintoons.

And yet so many of our fellow "conservatives" are happy to wave that flag when they have a book to sell....

What caused teenage violence before video games?

You have false (or made up) information and you want to ban something.

Wow. The Taliban would love you.

"What caused teenage violence before video games?"

Teenage violence before the era of videogames was due to the teenager's frustration about the lack of videogames.

Or it may have been due to violent pinball games. My research isn't done on that one yet. But you just look at that metal ball hitting all those innocent bumpers and targets...what do you expect a child to do after being exposed to that?
