Gosh, I must be getting old. I remember when self-abuse was nothing but 'whacking'. :->

That kind of self abuse is now called a healthy response one sexual awakening.

Seriously, I had a friend a daughter who suffered from depression so badly, if she had a bad day she would cause an injury to herself in order deflect her pain. In other words she could cope better with pain of her injury than the pain of her emotions.
