It probably isn't a popular view but I've always considered the government shutdown and budget fights to be Newt's larger victories.
Because he had the courage to pursue them, it focused the public's attention on the automatic increases and a lot of the nonsense around the issue. Limbaugh educated millions of people about this very thing. I think it was a moment of awakening for millions of conservatives who finally saw what a crock the Dims foisted on them. And the nonsense about throwing old people into the streets and starving children.
Like I said, many people would say it was a disaster. But I don't think it was. It was political hardball, properly played in the House. Too bad Newt's personal peccadillos came out in the stress and were exploited by libmedia.
