The p.c. reactions to the Canadian Muslim terror bust--and the swiftness with which the MSM has lost interest in the story (quick, get back to Brangelina!)-- show we remain a doomed continent of ostriches. It's the subject of my Vent: The jihadis among us.
And from my column: Many clueless North Americans remain shocked, shocked, that jihadis live among them — despite the open secret of our northern neighbor's reputation as an Islamic terrorist safe haven. A cloud of befuddlement looms. The Toronto Star reports, with jaw-dropping dim-wittedness, that "it is difficult to find a common denominator" among those who would kill us. The Canadian plot has been tied to the arrests of two young Georgia Muslim men earlier this year. One is Ehsanul Islam Sadequee. Note to editors: please do not substitute "Islam" with the word "Peace." In May, Shahawar Matin Siraj was convicted of plotting to blow up the Herald Square subway station in New York City . He caught the attention of law enforcement after ranting against the US at a local Islamic bookstore. Also last month, Virginia Death Row inmate and Nation of Islam convert John Allan Mohammed was convicted of six Maryland murders from his fall 2002 Beltway-area criminal spree. In April, a federal jury convicted 23-year-old Hamid Hayat, a Lodi man, of attending a terrorist training camp in Pakistan and returning to the US to commit violent jihad against his fellow citizens. In March, Iranian-born US citizen Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar drove a rented Jeep Cherokee into a mass of students on the campus of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to avenge US actions against Muslims around the world. Last summer, officials busted a terrorist plot to attack infidels at military and Jewish sites in the Los Angeles on the fourth anniversary of 9/11 or the Jewish holy days. It was devised by militant Muslim converts of Jam'iyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh (Arabic for "Assembly of Authentic Islam") who had sworn allegiance to violent jihad at California's New Folsom State Prison.

Almost five years into the war on terror, we still have yet to see Western governments take domestic threats seriously, and two editorials make excellent points in that regard today in response to the revelation of the Toronto terror cell this week. The Examiner talks about the "broad strata of delusion" in how security checks get conducted in the age of Islamist terror:

Don't get too down on "moderate" Muslims who watch this and do nothing. Do not underestimate the terror of a Mafia-like structure such as the Muslim Brotherhood that operates inside these people's neighborhoods running brute protection rackets to raise money and intimidate people. Look at what happened to the Christian family in New Jersey last year, ( http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1322287/posts ) slaughtered in their own home in supposedly safe America. |

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Canadian released from Guantanamo Bay has admitted he is a member of al-Qaeda - and so are most of his family.
Abdurahman Khadr said he had been "raised to become a suicide bomber" by his father, who was killed in a Pakistani military operation last year.
He said he grew up in Afghanistan and played with the children of al-Qaeda fugitive leader Osama Bin Laden.
Khadr was released after agreeing to co-operate with US authorities, but his brother is still in the Cuba base."

I believe that the more openly we can talk about the issue of extremism and terrorism in islam, the more these groups can feel empowered to make a difference within their religious community.
Yet Canadian officials fell over themselves to assure the world that the plot had nothing to do with Islam. How long will they ignore what is in front of their faces, and decline to confront what will destroy them if it is not confronted?
