this looks like a PR release by the losing side of a study. Just as in media work this report contains plenty of commentary mixed in with hyperbole. Dr. Haley has had many plenty of great research work in areas besides the GWS and he is well respected in the field. Last week his department delivered a Bird Flu report that showed most of the hype is just that HYPE. More people have died from the Flu shot than from Bird Flu.
UT Southwestern, where Dr. Haley is a department head, has 4 Nobel prize winners in medicine and recently beat, Harvard, Johns Hopkins etc.etc.for a major heart study, is leading the charge on spinal injuries and people like Dr. Haley have a huge impact on the ethics of the school.
This type of work for vets is long over due. The VA is finally getting their hospitals into a recent century, but they have a ways to go. Southwestern and Haley are working hard to get the Dallas VA in shape. /vet rant off.
Nothing could be worse for American science than having politicians directing it.

Fumento is a science writer. He was the heretic who wrote the book "The Myth of Heterosexual Aids" in the late 80's. The book showed that Aids was almost entirely a homosexually transmitted disease and there would not be a crossover into the hetero population.
