Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's poll numbers are looking better -- especially among the state's independent voters -- and he has gained the edge when matched against his potential Democratic challengers in the November general election, a Field Poll released today shows.
The Field Poll released today showed the Republican governor has improved his standing and is now viewed favorably by an equal percentage of voters surveyed -- 46 percent -- as those who view him unfavorably.
The governor's improvement is based on a significant jump among independent voters. Independents view him positively by 46 to 41 percent -- an increase from a February Field Poll that showed only 34 percent of independents viewed him favorably and 56 percent saw him unfavorably.
The poll also showed the governor ahead of Westly, 44 percent to 42 percent, in a head-to-head race and topping Angelides in a general election matchup by 46 percent to 39 percent.
The governor's improved poll numbers are a major turnaround from November, when the voters soundly rejected his slate of special election ballot measures. Schwarzenegger had campaigned as an aggressive Republican partisan, criticizing the Democrats who control both houses of the Legislature, and blasting nurses, teachers and firefighters as special interests who control Sacramento.

Clearly Arnold did the right thing, going to the center. THAT is the only way he can win, and I am glad to see he is listening to people who know how to help him win.
Conservatives should rejoice that the chances of having leftist Dem Angelides or Westly as governor have diminished somewhat -- but we are not out of the woods.
I'll vote for him. Here's our California ballot:
For governor:
JEFFREY R. BURNS - General Contractor
ARNOLD SCHWARZjhgENEGGAR - Governor
BILL CHAMBERS - Railroad Switchman
ROBERT C. NEWMAN II - Psychologist/Farmer
-
I am no longer in California, but even 70 miles North, Angelides scares me... How that guy ever got a job better than toilet licker amazes me...
"I'll vote for him"
Good!
Voting for Arnold in the primary is important, for Republicans to show their support. If people cast protest votes, that will just encourage the Dems to try to continue to split the conservative vote, just enough for them to squeak into the Governor's office in November.
I hope Arnold's CA campagin trip will get him lots of good publicity.
"Schwarzenegger, in his latest letter to supporters, gave details of his "Protecting the California Dream" trip, scheduled after Tuesday's primary.
He said it "will take me from the northern tip of California to our southernmost communities, where I will personally campaign by walking door-to-door, meeting people where they work, talking and listening in coffee shops and living rooms.''
Angelides is a full fledged communist, he himself admits to being "progressive", which is a euphomism for that. Westly is hiding it better, but they are two peas in a pod.
"Westly and Angelides were twins on the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill (yes), fully funding education (yes), affordable housing (of course), health care (yes), same-sex marriage (yes), and signing a bill to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants (yes)"

WESTLY:
In the Stand spot, Westly says, Im Steve Westly before I ask for your vote, I owe it to you to tell you where I stand. Im strongly pro-choice and I believe protecting our environment is fundamental. As governor, Ill make education my top priority. Then the announcer adds, Steve Westly. Require big corporations to provide adequate health insurance, expand the Healthy Families Program, incentives for hybrid vehicles and solar energy, stop any new offshore drilling.

ANGELIDES:
Angelides calls himself a champion of "progressive values." As state treasurer, he has pushed public pension funds to dump tobacco stocks, invest in urban renewal projects and pressure corporations into cleaning up the environment. A close ally of labor, he also supports abortion rights, gay marriage, gun control and driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.
If he makes it into a general-election race, his call for increasing taxes could pose problems; Schwarzenegger has been steadfast in opposing higher taxes.

In the meantime, Arnold:
"They're focused on the Capitol's perpetual war between business and the big four Democratic Party subfactions: labor unions, personal injury lawyers, environmentalists and consumer protection advocates.
The past two years have been bleak ones for the Big 4 because Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has aligned himself with the California Chamber of Commerce and other business groups, rejecting nearly all of the measures they had dubbed "job killers." Schwarzenegger and business, moreover, bulldozed the Legislature into approving an overhaul of worker's compensation that authorities say is reducing employers' costs by $15 billion a year. It was the most significant advance either side had made in the war in many years and one that Democrats and their allies now want to undo. "

Arnold also vetoed the homsexual marriage bill, which Anglides and Westly are on record of supporting.
Arnold made the legislature rescind the drivers licenses for illegals bill, then when they put it on his desk again, he vetoed it. Angelides and Westly are on the record FOR the bill.
Arnold categorically refused to raise taxes, despite Dem pressure and his Dem opponents are proposing huge tax increases.
There are huge differences with major impacts on CA, between Arnold and the Dems.
1) Increased taxation to the highest tax rate in California history
2) Proposed and approved the biggest spending in California history.
3) Suggested and promoted the highest rate of indebtedness in California history.
4) Has abridged more property rights than any other governor in history.
5) Has never cut state spending or reduced a state tax. Not once.
These outrages weren't committed by the legilstlature or the Democrats but by a liberal. A liberal Republican. A foreign national.
Get rid of the Austrian!
Vote for a conservative in the upcoming Republican gubernatorial primary. There are three running.
Yes, I would expect the DICCs* to be deeply saddened that Arnold may beat the commies in the CA election.

Is McClintock ahead?
The poll didn't ask about McClitnock, but he has a good chance of becoming lt gov, IF Arnold wins th governorship.
I vote ABAD. Anybody But a Democrat.
"I vote ABAD. Anybody But a Democrat."
That's the winning attitude -- not like those bash Republicans, but never have a single word of criticism about the Dems, while telling us how conservative they are.
1. Why don't you PROVE your allegations.
2. What do you think Angelides and Westly will do?
3. Arnold IS a US Citizen.
Good for Arnold!
"Good for Arnold!"
===
And good for us. Angelides or Westly would put the last nails in CA's coffin. Remember, CA's credit rating was rock bottom, and was recently upgraded a notch, but we have a ways to go.
Not to mention that A/W would completely destroy business in CA.
I Don't care what the Democrats do. They'll haven't nominated a conservative. If they did nominate a conservative gubernatorial candidate I'd vote for their candidate in a heartbeat before I'd vote for a liberal Republican.
Schwarzenegger is a citizen of Austria. He is, in fact, a foreign national. Reacquiring his Austrian citizenship in 1999 violated the oath he swore in 1984 to obtain his naturalized US citizenship. Schwarzenegger needs to decide. Either he's and Austrian or he's a US citizen but he can't be both. I'd prefer he remain an Austrian.
Get rid of the European liberal!
Vote for a conservative in the June primary. There are three on the primary ballot.
If I'm here come November's election and not having pulled up stakes for another state, I'm with Arnold.
Great post. No truer words have been spoken, couldn't agree with you more. California will keep sinking into the abyss of liberal socialism. I thought by now Californians would have learned their lesson. Conservatives I talk to on the west coast say they've had it with Schwarzy and will not vote for him a second time. Freepers who keep supporting Schwarzy`s liberal policy are fools.

Bill Chambers for Governor ! He'll get California back on the right track ! :-D
