Snow: Flow of illegals not an 'invasion'
Spokesman says Article 4 of Constitution doesn't apply to border issue
Saying Mexico is "not the enemy," presidential press secretary Tony Snow today rejected the characterization of the constant flow of illegal aliens over the U.S. border as an "invasion."
At today's White House press briefing, WND asked the spokesman: "Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution says, 'The United States shall guarantee to every state in the Union a republican form of government and shall protect each of them from foreign invasion.' My question is, does the president believe this foreign invasion means only armed invasion, or doesn't this also mean the invasion of millions of illegal immigrants?"
Responded Snow: "I think what you are doing is you're attaching a martial connotation to something that does not have martial consequences.
"What the president has said if you were talking about an invasion, he's made it clear that Mexico is not the enemy."
WND also asked Snow about a lawsuit by war veteran Sgt. Peter Damon, who lost both of his arms in Iraq. Damon has sued Michael Moore for using clips without his permission in "Fahrenheit 9/11" to give the false impression that he opposed the war.
"I didn't lose my arms over there to come back and be used as ammunition against my commander in chief," Damon was quoted as saying.
"If he is asked," queried WND, "will this commander in chief be willing to testify in court on behalf of this double amputee sergeant?"
Snow called it a "hypothetical question"
"Please don't put me in the position of trying to answer to a lawsuit between somebody who served his country and Michael Moore," Snow said. "We'll let them deal with it."
Definitely better then Scott McClellan. Between Josh Bolton and TS they're getting the President to face his critics more often and doing it with a touch of urgency. But in the end, its still up to Dubya to make the changes that will get conservatives to flock back to the GOP homebase.
LOL, the junkyard huh? I saw your other post and went to the link. Very impressive!
See if you can get me Martha washington's apple turnover recipe. :-)
Bingo.
It definitely fits definition 3. I just wish people would get a grip on the fact that all the anger they're venting toward Dubya now should have been vented toward all politicians every day since 2001, or maybe even for the last 20 years.
The word conservative means more than "A person who likes the House immigration reform bill."
How soon you've forgotten the Toon.
Agree 100%.
The word "conservative" means something more than just "someone who likes the House immigration bill."
Well, that's not over the top at all. Why don't you compare Snow to Goebbels and really show us your brilliance?
Cripplecreek, after several years together on FR I hope you know my character well enough that you'll take this as something that comes from the heart of a friend.
That was a punkass thing to say and is far beneath you. The people backing the amnesty are backing something idiotic, but none of them are in favor of more child molesters, and you can bet the Freeper you addressed is not, either.
I'll speak for myself ie your question.... I'm not so much mad at Tony as disappointed that he took the job, if, as spokesman, a person has to sell their soul to talk the party line .... well you get my drift and I dare not say more.
The "Punkass" comment was the snide remark about the people who don't understand diplomacy. I stand by what I said. He said something intended to be insulting and I asked a legitimate question.
LOL!
Yes, I think many feel like you do. I am unable to listen to radio but I know how well liked he was.
It somewhat reminds me of Leiberman when he joined up with Gore. I always thought he had decent values until he sold his soul to try to become vice President.
Sadly, I suspect you're right. Why sadly? Because I think we've wimpified ourselves to the point that we can't get the electorate to be libertarian.
Speaker Pelosi.
That's what you want, right?
The way to solve the immigration problem is to stand by the house, not massacre them. Why should a Rep who supported border security pay for the stupidity of John McCain?
Sending Tony out to make these kinds of fictitious statements are hazardous to his health. I really feel sorry for Tony having to make such declarations with a straight face. What really worries me, however, is knowing the turmoil he's going through while trying to pass this pap off as believable. Tony is an honorable mand and this has to be eating away at him.
Right now, he's somehow justifying it. It's just a matter of time before Tony's conscience starts screaming to tell the truth once again. I just hope the stress this must be causing him won't jeopardize his health.
Has anyone condemning Tony in this thread asked themselves what the MSM would have done with a clip of him saying "Yes, it's an invasion?"
