Beginning a public relations offensive intended to prod divided Congressional Republicans into overhauling the nation's immigration laws, President Bush rebuked conservative opponents of his plan on Thursday and warned that there is "no excuse" for delay.
..In his speech, Mr. Bush took aim at House members who brand the Senate bill amnesty, though he did not mention any by name. "Some members of Congress argue that no one who came to this illegally should be allowed to continue living and working in our country," he said. The lawmakers are "are acting on deeply felt principles," he said, but added, "I also believe that the approach they suggest is wrong and unrealistic."

Raw meat from the NY Times.
Why do we need to change the immigration laws, Mr. President? Why not just enforce the laws we have, Mr. President? Oh, and Mr. President, how many of the tens of millions of Mexicans and South Americans that you want to bring to the US will vote Republican? How many, in contrast will vote for the party of Ted Kennedy - the guy who wrote the bill you're pushing? I don't get it, Mr. President. You're supposed to be a Republican. Why are you sentencing the Republican Party to death?
What's the rush? Is 43 worried that someone'll finally be able to check out all of the fine print in the Senates 600+ pages of swill?
With all due respect, Mr. President, no. We, the people, argue that those who came to this country illegally should be punished for breaking the laws of the United States by being forced to leave, and not rewarded for illegal behavior; and only allowed to continue "living and working in our country" if they follow the law that you are sworn to uphold.

Well, I suppose no one can accuse Bush of being easily swayed by polls. Its a trait that comes in handy when it comes to foreign policy, but its not so good for domestic policy.
Interesting, the vast majority of Americans feel that the approach put forth by the president and the senate is wrong and unrealistic.
So who should the Congress listen to Mr. President, you and the 50+ that voted for that repugnant legislation or millions and millions of voters?
I see an excuse, Bush's plan sucks sweaty donkey danglies.
Yes, President for over 5 years.
Whats this "deeply felt principles" BS? What about the law? My man Bush is sounding more liberal every day.
NYT couldn't care less about illegal immigration. What they're sellin is the division between conservatives and Republicans. Weak Dem divide and conquer attempt. Paid political propaganda?
As the President and the Senate have completely bought into the idea of a "comprehensive" approach as the best solution to the problem, the House is the last line of defense. The House is the one that is standing up for a conservative immigration (more or less) and we do not want to "punish" it in November, unless we want to see the Senate bill railroaded straight through Congress.
What's the rush? Is 43 worried that someone'll finally be able to check out all of the fine print in the Senates 600+ pages of swill?
Exactly. If this bill is so good, it can stand a little scrutiny. Rushing it through only ensures that we won't have time to learn much about it.
Sorry Mr. President. But you don't get it. And the RNC won't get a penny from me if you push this amnesty through. Never.
Closer and closer to outright saying "just let `em in / let `em stay." If he does the pubies are sunk. If they do, the country is sunk.
I found an "excuse".

"NYT couldn't care less about illegal immigration. What they're sellin is the division between conservatives and Republicans. Weak Dem divide and conquer attempt. Paid political propaganda?"
Are you Kidding? The NYT -like all left-wingers -Loves immigration, legal and illegal, and has *always* pushed for open borders. They love the cheap labor, the future democrat voters, and a chance to weaken the social conservatives by making this country into a multi-cultural society.
Bush is in bed with Ted Kennedy and the NYT on immigration.
Mr. President please stop insulting the public's intelligence. The Senate bill is even worse than just amnesty. Sir control the border and enforce the laws. Later if the need can be demonstrated a guest worker program can be discussed. I call on you and all elected officials to act in the best interests of the country not for the best interests of illegal aliens.
Well, just the bits that I've managed to read ought to see the Senate's version consigned to Hades.
