Texas governor plans "virtual" border patrol
The Scotsman ^ | June 2, 2006

Texas Gov. Rick Perry unveiled plans on Thursday to place hundreds of surveillance cameras along the Rio Grande and stream the images to the Internet so computer users everywhere can help patrol the U.S.-Mexico border.

Speaking to a gathering of sheriffs from border counties, Perry said virtual border patrollers spotting illegal immigrants would be able to call a toll-free phone number to report them to Texas authorities.

"A stronger border is what Americans want and it's what our security demands and that is what Texas is going to deliver," he said.

The cameras, which would cost $5 million to install along the state's 1,000-mile (1,600 km) border with Mexico, will be trained on "criminal hot spots and common routes used to enter this country," he said.

The proposal by Perry, a Republican running for re-election in November, comes amid a right-wing-led campaign against illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Perry did not say when the cameras would be put in place.

Sounds like Perry has a very good idea. Volunteers manning monitoring stations and calling notificaiton to border patrol/Texas law enforcement. Hopefully the US allies of the illeagels won't destroy the cameras.

If experience in Arizona serves, these will be used for target/baseball practice by the smugglers. The Border Patrol has to safeguard their tall towers or people will climb them and whack the hell out of the equipment up there.

Dumb idea. How do you say "target practice" in Spanish?

I will not vote for him, period. I may just skip that vote. None of them are worth 2 cents.

"a right-wing-led campaign against illegal immigration"

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1417560/posts

Proving my bigoted belief: that most Americans--in point of fact, a clear majority--are "right-wing".
I have to go sharpen my British commando (Fairbanks-Sykes) knives now, and inventory my ammo.
Why? Because that's what we hysterical, right-wing thread-jumping closed border loons do.

so....I can sit here with my DSL connection at 42 degrees north latitude, watching hoardes of illegal migrants crossing the Mexican border, and do.......WHAT?

Worse than a stupid idea....a smoke-screen misdirection play. Trying to convince us they are doing something while they continue to fight the wall, kicking and screaming. Not gonna fall for it!

Good idea if 'virtual deportation' isn't coupled with it.

When I was a kid we would sit on grannys porch and count cars comming into town. This sounds similar and equally effective at stopping illegals.

I was thinking of casting a virtual vote for him, and policies like this only reinforce my thinking.

Those cameras will be smashed or stolen within 30 days. Count on it. Without a wall, that's just another waste of US Taxpayers' monies.

I think having access to state level funded Predator (&) drones with FLIR & Hellfire missiles preprogrammed to fly only the Rio Grande channel, fire only from bank to bank, and a 'border patrol watch' lottery ($2 to enter for a weeks' worth of patrolling - daily 1 hr shift), citizens against illegal immigration would spend millions to help enforce US law from the comfort of their laptops, personal PC's at home or at Starbucks w/ high speed connection. (Chance to blast a wetback, a coyote, or a drug runner).

Unfortunately it would only last a while after word got out...targets would shift attempted entry points...then TX could rent the system to AZ and NM.

A blast of a lottery.

Texas governor plans "virtual" border patrol.

I would prefer that it be an "actual" border.

There is virtual reality and then there is actual reality.

video games are ok as long as you are not a governor of a state that is being invaded. When that happens you have to actually do something.
