I work with the paint thinners similar to those that are used to cook meth. They dissippate quickly, and leave behind little that could cause after effects. I use some of the same things thin the paint for kitchen cabinets. The smell lasts sometimes for months, but of course I haven't done a study of actuarial tables.

My husband used to work in commercial printing. He would come home reeking of the solvents they used.
