William F. Weld, who has faced surprisingly strong competition in the race for the Republican nomination for governor, is expected to choose Christopher L. Jacobs, the New York secretary of state and a Buffalo businessman, as his running mate, a Republican involved in the Weld campaign said last night.
Mr. Jacobs, a real estate developer and a member of the Buffalo Board of Education, could help Mr. Weld gain support from upstate Republican leaders, some of whom have grumbled that the party's ticket is dominated by New York City and suburban candidates.
Andrea Tantaros, a spokeswoman for Mr. Weld, would not comment on the plan for a running mate, but said Mr. Weld plans to make an announcement today at the state convention in Hempstead, on Long Island.
Mr. Jacobs could not be reached for comment. In April, Gov. George E. Pataki named Mr. Jacobs to replace Randy A. Daniels as secretary of state. He was confirmed by the Senate this month, but it is unlikely that he will retain that job after Mr. Pataki leaves office at the end of the year.
Last week, Mr. Weld's opponent, John Faso, a former state assemblyman, chose C. Scott Vanderhoef, the Rockland County executive, as his running mate.
Mr. Weld has closely guarded his pick for lieutenant governor; even some of the most powerful party insiders said on Tuesday night that they had no hint.
Mr. Jacobs made an unsuccessful bid for a State Senate seat earlier this year, losing to a Democrat, Marc A. Coppola. Mr. Jacobs, 39, is a former deputy commissioner of the Erie County planning office and has been a vocal advocate for more charter schools in the state.
The choice of Mr. Jacobs could set off another battle between Mr. Weld and Mr. Faso. On Monday, James...

Aren't there any native New Yorkers qualified to serve in high office?
Homeland Security Grants to New York Slashed (40% D.C. too)
FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.
Weld is originally from NY.
Spitzer is pure evil. He'd be a slip-and-fall governor.
Bill Weld is the original RINO, though. If it becomes a Spitz-Weld race, I have no idea who'll win, but the sure loser will be the state of New York.
More lies and perfidy from the NYT.
Ignore.
Wasn't Weld the Governor of Massacusetts a while back?
RINO doesn't matter here. Didn't you read my post? Pure evil. If you had a lab and a billion dollars in grant money, you couldn't create a worse governor than Eliot (ET) Spitzer.
I thought Arlen Specter was the original RINO, although Weld is only slightly better.
Yes
Spitzer is evil, so is AIDS Weld. Fortunately, the latter won't be nominated by the State GOP.
I know Chris a little. He ran for the same senate seat I was going to run for. I stepped aside in the special election for him. He had a few email conversations and I supported him.
He has money, he is known as Mr Delaware North $$$$ His parents own the Boston Bruins. I am sure Weld is doing this because of Chris' involvement with the charter schools and his ties to Buffalo.
Faso on the other hand know what the finances in Erie county are all about, he serves on the Erie County control board. He knows downstate because his assembly seat. Faso is by far the better candidate and I will stand with him as I run for Assembly.
I'd rather see Spitzer win so the state can get a first-hand look at pure socialism. Weld is a classic Rockefeller Republican who'll end up destroying the GOP & Conservative Party down the road.
You don't win by losing.
You just don't.
People don't "learn" from giving themselves socialism. They just accomodate to it.
My, opinion, though, is that Spitzer is a vey dangerous man, and allowing him to have the governorship of New York as a platform for demagoguery and national aspirations is way too risky. I prefer that he be squashed like a bug, even if it is Weld who does it.
The selection of Jacobs shows that he either learned from his experience with Jane Swift, or he got lucky in New York, because Jacobs is not that kind of lightweight.
The biggest problem with Weld is that he presided over a collapse in the state party. I recall fundraisers where he, the featured celebrity, would arrive late, leave early, refuse to pose for pictures with contributors, and grudge even shaking hands. He has that peculiarly patrician born-on-third-base attitude and seems to believe that work and partisan politics are beneath him.
I was prepared to like him but that was erased by three of these fundraisers back to back. By the time Weld was gone, so were Mass's Republican Congressmen and any hope of sustaining a veto in the legislature.
The current gubernatorial candidate for the Republicans in Massachusetts is current lieutenant governor (three days or so a week), Kerry "Muffy" Healey, who is like Weld without the personal charm (and you might have noticed I didn't mention any personal charm). The conservative candidate, who will certainly outpoll Healey, is Independent Kristy Mihos (a guy), who went rogue on the Republicans when it was clear the octogenerian Brahmins who still cling to the reins of the party were anointing the unelectable Healey, who stands for basically nothing but the idea she should be the boss.
The Democrats will probably run Clinton's quota queen, Deval Patrick. The early front-runner, DA Tom Reilly, has suffered self-inflicted campaign implosion. For you New Yorkers, think Elliot Spitzer wannabee (and what is Spitzer but a Chuck Schumer wannabee? And what is Schumer but a Hillary wannabee?)
The outgoing governor, Mitt Romney, has his hat in the ring for the presidential nomination in 08, all but officially. Mitt is conservative but his efforts to rebuild the party have not succeeded. The state is a lost cause and those conservatives that stay are held by family or business ties and generally leave right when they retire and have time and energy to help on campaigns.

Upstate needs its own state.
My point of posting these details about Mass is, this is your future if you give Weld the job.
On the other hand, if you want to see what you get if you elect Spitzer, you have to ask the people in Pyongyang.
Kinda bad to be you this year.

Weld is not going to implement any groundbreaking reforms or break precedence as NY state Governor. In effect, the status quo will continue, and it'll be the same typical New York socialism that has been the state's hallmark since FDR was Governor.
