That is a good way to piss them off. I have done what you said and they searched my vehicle anyway - in CA "driving is a privilege - not a right".

If they indeed search your vehicle without a warrant they were in violation of more than one SCOTUS decision and have opened themselves to a lawsuit.

They can threaten, cajole, and imply whatever they like but they must have a warrant to search your vehicle if they lack PC.
