Injury forces team to enlist Ricky Rudd for qualifying and as replacement during race

The misfortune Tony Stewart suffered at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C., last weekend, a fractured right shoulder blade, will bring a familiar name back to Dover International Speedway this weekend in Ricky Rudd.
Stewart announced Tuesday that he plans on starting Sunday's Neighborhood Excellence 400 presented by Bank of America at Dover. But veteran Rudd, who retired from the Nextel Cup Series at the end of last season, will be ready to jump in Stewart's car early in the race.

Yeah! I have one of those hats, too!
Hmmmmmmm....
My husband (a Stewart fan) asked me (a Rudd fan) that same question last night. I said at least a year - and you should have seen the expression on his face!
Probably (for you or me) about 6 weeks, but I don't expect Tony to favor it for more than a week or so. I don't look for him to sit out more than 1 race. I seem to recall Coach Gibbs let Bobby Labonte drive with almost the same injury a few years ago.
I also read about the Labonte incident this morning.
Here is how he handled it......
Labonte overcoming painful shoulder injury

FORT WORTH -- Bobby Labonte is driving despite pain, but he insists it's not because he's a tough guy.
``Ask my wife,'' Labonte said with a grin. ''I'm not very tough. I'm definitely not one of those tough Texans people talk about.''
Despite his protestations, the 34-year-old Winston Cup star gave more evidence Friday that he is indeed tough as nails. He took part in both practice sessions and then qualified second to pole-winner Kenny Irwin in time trials for Sunday's Primestar 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Labonte, who fractured the tip of his right shoulderblade in a crash last Friday during a practice session for the Busch Series race, drove the first 45 laps in the Winston Cup race in Darlington last Sunday before giving way to relief driver Matt Kenseth.
Team owner Joe Gibbs, former coach of the Washington Redskins, knows something about toughness.
``I can tell you that it takes real mental toughness to work your way through the kind of pain that you have from that type of injury,'' Gibbs said.
Labonte spent four days this week working with trainers from the Carolina Panthers, rehabilitating the shoulder. He also had a special cast built to alleviate some of the pounding he takes in the team's Pontiac.
``The thing is I can lean back in the seat and it feels pretty good,'' Labonte said. ``The biggest problem I had last week was shifting, but once you get on the track, that's not a big deal. The biggest problem I have now is extending the arm to get it in reverse. But, hopefully, we don't need to do that very often.''
May miss this weekend, granddaughter's birthday. This is the one that "requested" a 24 cake last year.

Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Budweiser will honor three generations of racing success with a commemorative Fathers Day paint scheme for the No. 8 Budweiser car that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will race at Michigan International Raceway on Fathers Day, June 18. The paint scheme is based upon the No. 8 cars driven by Ralph Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt during their NASCAR careers.
The predominantly cream-colored car will feature vintage Budweiser bow-tie logos which were introduced in 1956 the same year Ralph Earnhardt won the NASCAR National Sportsman title, a series that eventually became the modern-day NASCAR Busch Series.
I love that era, and I like the look of the car, said Earnhardt Jr. of the vintage Bud machine. If I cant go back in time and race in the 1950s, at least I can drive a car that looks like its from the 50s. Ive always liked bold, simple paint schemes, and itll be cool to drive a car that looks so similar to what my dad and grandpa drove.
From the early days of our sponsorship of Dale, to our current involvement with NASCAR and Dale Jr., Budweiser has always been proud to be associated with the Earnhardts and their great racing tradition, said Tony Ponturo, vice president of global media and sports marketing, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. We think the fans will really appreciate this vintage car honoring two of racings all-time greats, Ralph and Dale, on Fathers Day.
Looking good! Thanks!
aww, c'mon ... a new jersey, of course!
nyuk nyuk nyuk.
...sorry, couldn't resist.
