Is the IRA a terrorist org.?

This site, which I found via a direct link at the FBI homepage, indicates that the IRA is still classified as a terrorist organization, despite some recent and questionable public posturing in the direction of sanity.

MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base

Just as it's Administration policy to focus the war on terror in Iraq so that it has less chance of engulfing the USA, Europe and the West, I am coming to the opinion that it may be a better plan, rather than to complain to the Mods here about terror supporters and have them kicked, to instead encourage these terror-supporting trash to come here and invite them to post frequently.  This way, the FBI and other counterterrorism organizations who undoubtedly monitor this site (and particularly discussion threads which touch on terrorism) will have greater opportunities to gather information about these individuals and deal with them appropriately.  I would suggest that if they are immediately kicked off the thread or the site, then this means that it will be that much more difficult for law enforcement to gather information.  I do understand that these people are revolting and it  makes the vast majority of sane FReepers angry and sick to their stomachs to read  the vile trash that they post, but perhaps people could  instead view it as an opportunity to assist law enforcement, which oftentimes has quite a dirty job.  Many here feel a great sense of unhappiness because we feel helpless in this war and don't really know how to help.  I would suggest that this would be a way that we can all help.

The FBI would undoubtedly appreciate it if everyone were to alert them to terror supporters so that they can be appropriately monitored.  Here is a convenient link that can be bookmarked in your browser so that notifying the FBI will be no more than a matter of a few mouse clicks..

You have a point, I guess I should quell my blood-lust just a teeny bit! ;)

Not necessarily....allow your blood to boil but instead of clicking on the "report abuse" button here at FR, click on the FBI tip-reporting link instead  :-)

I would suggest that this course of action would be far more gratifying  :-)

They'll soon be a junta, the de facto government of Ireland, unless the authorities get their heads out of their arses over here!

Why do you say that? The IRA has no tangible support in the ROI. And I don't believe the Irish citizenry will allow SF to gain too much, if any, of a substantial foothold, in the gov't.

Our PR/multiparty system has the flaw that a fringe party could hold the balance of power, if you check the last Irish General Election results - you'll see the numbers were right for a FF/SFIRA coalition.

Now, you are correct that the majority won't stand for it, which may then mean a second civil war.

In the very least, I predict political unrest over here, if not another Irish Civil War, then perhaps the general unrest of the 1930's - the IRA/Blueshirt/FF dispute.

He won't be able to reply, but I believe banned posters still get their pings. So I hear, anyway.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that.  At any rate, hopefully he will be so incensed by my suggestion that people report him to the FBI that we will re-enroll at FR under a different name and come back to this thread to hurl abuse at me and call me a "fascist" in order to show us what a tough and fearless guy he is   :-)

Dimwits can usually be counted on to do dimwitted things   :-)

LOL! That's possible!

I must point out, though - not all banned posters can see their pings, my guess it's the ones who have been completely nuked (ie, all posts by them removed) who can't.

In any rate, he might revisit this thread! ;)

the majority of those killed during the "Troubles" by Republicans were members of the security forces

Just barely. The IRA and its splinter groups killed 774 members of the security forces as opposed to 711 civilians, including almost 300 Catholics - that's almost an equal number of civlians killed, and hardly something to cite to give the IRA the moral high ground, which appears to be your intention. The IRA killed far more Catholics than the security forces, in fact.

I don't care if people in the Republic do not want it for socioeconomic reasons. Ireland should be whole.

If a majority of people in both the Republic and Northern Ireland don't want it to be, than why should it be? It may happen at some future point, but only when a majority on both sides of the border are ready accept it.

I absolutely hate Paisley and his son.

Then you must be thrilled at the prospect of Paisley becoming First Minister with Martin McGuinness as his deputy next month. I know that Paisley is a favourite bugaboo amongst Irish Americans, but he is not a terrorist and neither he nor the DUP have supported or been affiliated with any terrorist organisations - unlike McGuinness. He also happens to be very popular amongst his Catholic constituents. It's very ironic actually - all those decades of armed conflict, and what did it get SF/IRA? Big Ian as First Minister, that's what!
