Rush Limbaugh joins the "Most Powerful Names in Talk Radio" From the Baltimore Sun Limbaugh added to WCBM lineup on June 1 By Rob Hiaasen Sun reporter May 24, 2006 He's back where he began in Baltimore radio.
Syndicated conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh, canceled on WBAL-AM in March after a decade on the Baltimore station, joins WCBM-AM's talk-show lineup June 1. Limbaugh, who will still be heard on WBAL until May 31, replaces talk show host G. Gordon Liddy on WCBM in its noon-to-3 p.m. weekday time slot.
"Limbaugh is an icon. He represents conservative talk radio," said WCBM General Manager Bob Pettit, who had the challenge of programming against Limbaugh. "He's the 800-pound gorilla."
Nationally, Limbaugh is heard on nearly 600 stations by an estimated 20 million weekly listeners. He was first heard in Baltimore on WCBM in 1990. Then a 10,000-watt station, WCBM eventually lost Limbaugh's popular call-in talk show to the much-larger WBAL. In March, the station announced a renewed focus on local news and hosts and canceled Limbaugh's program. The 50,000-watt WCBM had an opening. "We are now actually getting the opportunity to get the top names on the conservative talk side," said Pettit, who would not disclose details of Limbaugh's multiple-year contract.
Limbaugh joins the station's local and syndicated lineup, which includes Tom Marr, Sean Hannity and Les Kinsolving.

This is where he started then switched to WBAL sometime about when his TV show was on.
Now I have no further reason to listen to 1090 except on Saturday mornings when they have the Governor or Lt Governor on. Should be interesting to see what happens to the station's ratings.
I do like to switch off WMAL when Hannity drives me nuts...which is too often...to listen to Ron Smith on WBAL1090 AM during the 3-6 slot.
I can't stand Smith. Just the sound of his voice makes me think of nails on chalkboard.
Whats the real reason WMAL dropped him? He wasnt losing his audience, was he? I dont know why theyd want to give up market share unless theres more to this story...

The biggest reason is that a caller waits for an hour to talk about 15 seconds....he's a rude host. Ron Smith allows a conversation.

Why did WBAL drop Limbaugh? I want the official story and the real story--in media, of course, that is often two different tales.

You're going to be hard pressed to find a better overall talk radio station in the country than Pittsburgh's own FM talker 104.7.
Now they only have 6 hours of local talk hosts a day, Qunn & Rose in the morning (Found on XM's talk radio station from 6-10AM EDT/EST.) and Ellis Canon on sports 6-8PM.
Thier lineup is Qunn & Rose, Beck, Rush, Hannity, Canon, Savage, Coast to Coast (The Art Bell Crowd.). Throw in the fact that their news guy is a smart aleck who ads commentary quips and sarcasm to his broadcasts, which actually works, it's a liberal nightmare.
The station has practically buried KDKA-AM long the Pittsburgh news/talk king. They have turned over practically their entire host lineup since 104.7 came on the air two years ago and nothing has stopped the juggernaut of this FM talker.
BTW, I don't need to hear any stories about how polluted Pittsburgh air is. We don't have Air America on here which is a major source of air polution in and of itself.

Smith is usually pretty good, but he tends to get very irrational and emotional on the Iraq war, which he is against.
WBAL dropped Rush because his ratings have been slipping. That said they were still high. Frankly I've gotten to the point where I turned WBAL once Rush came on. Rush and Hannity carry the GOP water too much for me. I prefer true conservatives and different opinions. WBAL stays on for me now from 7am until 6pm.
Thats funny; thats usually when I turn them on, to listen to the O's. ( Chip sounds pretty banal to me and Ron Smith is a little too Pat Buchanany for my tastes... )
