Never in human history has a product the public has no interest in gotten so much free advertising from the media.

For police and security users, many of whom bought the device with grants from the Homeland Security Department and other federal agencies, the fuel efficiency is only an added bonus.Giving them another excuse not to walk is another.

That's not a product, that's a mental disorder. :P

Ever since I first heard of this gadget, I have been asking myself "why?".

Last week was the first time that I saw one being operated by a real, live human being. While it is a neat gadget, the guy riding it sure looks like a dork. Al Gore must have one of them.
(But who knows - the first bicycle riders also must have looked like total dorks)

In five years, have they improved its load capacity, speed or battery life/distance?
If not, this curiosity will surely die a slow (maybe not so slow) death, IMHO.

There's about 40 or so on eBay...ranging from $100 to $3,500. Cool! I would buy one for $200 if I did not have to pay shipping.

Good for very specialized applications -- though not the general public.

Dean Kamen, famously predicted in a 2001 Time magazine interview that the Segway "will be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy." And that, patently, was sheer lunacy.

I may have missed it in the article but I didn't see any mention of MTA having a "security officer" in the garage prior to the Segway rider arrived. Maybe just having an officer present solved the problem.

I've never believed the hype about how the Segway would revolutionize transportation in this country, or have a major impact on the way cities are desgned. However, if they could bring the price down to a more reasonable level, I think it could progress from a Yuppie fad, and find a customer base among police departments, college campuses, industrial parks, etc.
