Is Pat Robertson almighty?

May 27, 2006

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson says he has leg-pressed 2,000 pounds, but some say he'd be in a pretty tough spot if he tried.

The ''700 Club'' host's feat of strength is recounted on the Web site of his Christian Broadcasting Network. According to the site, Robertson worked his way up to lifting a ton.

Clay Travis of CBS SportsLine.com called the assertion impossible, writing that the leg-press record for football players at Florida State University is 665 pounds less. AP

Looks like he's cheating to me. He's pushing with his hands, too.

That's actually a photo still of Robertson's 1000 lb lift as the original article stated.

He is cheating with his hands.

Plus it's kind of hard to count the plates from the angle of the camera.

I can leg press over 1500 pounds. And if someone was taking a picture of me pressing 2000 pounds, I would make sure they got the entire stack of plates in the pic. (especially if I owned a television company and was using a professional photographer)

I thought the other picture was good just to show people what 2000 pounds looks like.

This is nothing. Hillary does this everytime she stands up from a sitting position.

And Senator Kennedy standing up is like leg pressing a Nimitz class aircraft carrier! (90,000+ tons)

No, your comparison suggests nobility and power. For Ted Kennedy, it would be more like lifting a distillery.

He is not cheating with his hands. Its impossible on that piece of equipment to use your hands for anything other than to brace yourself.

I don't know if it's considered 'cheating' or not, but I agree that your hands would be essentially useless in that position -- no way you could exert much force.

My son is a body builder and he said 2000 lbs leg press is not difficult. I know I used to leg press 360 lbs when I was younger and I was a skinny girl.

Actually I do very heavy leg presses the same way (hands on knees for up to 800 lbs. for a couple of reps on the final set) when I don't have a spotter around, i.e. for safety reasons--question is, does he have a spotter handy?

His hands are there so in case his kneecaps blow off they don't hit him in the face. ;-)

Some very weak football players. I'm in my late fifties and I top that by about one hundred pounds, at least for singles. Bad hips you understand.

I saw the video. What he calls a press is not a full press at all, he merely moves the weights about 12 inches. He barely bends his legs at all. It's not as if he was reclining his legs against his chest and then extending.

Back when I was lifting weights, it always killed me when someone tells me that he can bench press 300 lbs and then you ask to see him do it and he goes over to a machine with who-knows-what actual weight-to-leverage ratios. In fact bench pressing 300 lbs on a machine is about like bench pressing 200 lbs with free weights.

The only way to actually determine accurate lifts is with free weights. Machines are inherently inaccurate.
