Chapter two: Reaching for the dream
HOBART I Frances Vega cried when she heard the news.
On Nov. 23, the day before last Thanksgiving, she heard about Sen. Dick Lugar's formal introduction of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM, Act.
The still pending measure would help young, undocumented immigrants in the United States earn legal status by obtaining an education and completing national or public service, among other criteria.
"It's finally coming to fruition," says Vega, wiping her eyes at a table inside El Super Taco restaurant in Hobart.
Vega, director of Hispanic/Latino affairs for Ivy Tech Community College, sits next to 21-year-old Martin Berrum, whose family owns the restaurant and who had high hopes of enrolling in the school.

Griffin tells Berrum to take a calculator, pencil and scratch paper to a computer.
Berrum hesitates, more from nerves than any language obstacle. Vega tells him again in Spanish.
"He spoke good enough English without your help," Griffin tells Vega.
"You speak English fine, don't you?" Griffin asks Berrum.
He nods, sits down at a computer and stares into the screen.
Three days later, Vega receives Berrum's test results.
He scored 1 out of 25 in English.
But Vega, who overcame several obstacles to attain her own college degree, has hope -- and a plan. It starts the next day.

The Real Republicans in the US House have a plan too. It starts by killing the Rat/RINO senate amnesty bill.
This post is dire need of a barf alert. Another friggin' sob story about our wonderful "immigrants"
Exactly. All of my relatives who went to college have huge outstanding loans that they have to repay, unlike these illegal aliens.
I've never seen such a disconnect between the people and the numbskulls in the senate.
Throw a call into ICE first thing Tuesday morning and mention this restaraunt in Hobart.

Yep. They all have hard luck stories to tell; like we suckers who have to pay the bills haven't ever had a bad day in our lives?
Bingo!
I know exactly what you mean.
You have to feel for the citizens who are being displaced by the illegal aliens now invading our colleges. Nothing like flushing the American dream for some Americans.
The campus commies have invented a pretty good scam for themselves: get the gummint to finance their hate speech thru all these illegals.
Any other Hoosier remember the 21st Century Scholar program? Free ride to any of the state's colleges, so long as you managed a C average in high school, no mininum SAT or ACT scores, member of underrepresented race mandatory?
I can't say that I have; I'm a recent transplant from Crook county, Ill. (Best move I've ever made in my life).
Felt physically ill and had to turn C-span off.
dream act? NIGHTMARE for TAXPAYING PARENTS!!!!!
Ditch "dream act" and shove it Congress!
---He scored 1 out of 25 in English.---
I think it was Berrum on the line the last time I called H-P tech support.
Exactly. PUKEMAO!
Yep. They all have hard luck stories to tell; like we suckers who have to pay the bills haven't ever had a bad day in our lives?
Immigrating to the USA gives them an undeserved and instant pay raise of 1000%. I have no damn sympathy for him and his parents that cut to the head of the line, who gamed the system. Screw 'em. People in other counties are waiting 5-10 years just to get here legally, just to live and work here, never mind citizenship which everyone must wait for! And I would rather have those people (they speak English and have education) than the hordes streaming out of the failed nations to our South
