The 2006 Washington State Republican Convention concluded today with a resounding conservative note. The platform was not only considered in its entirety, defying the trend of recent years, but it was successfully and dramatically improved on many key fronts, including Immigration, Property Rights, and Human Life.
The willingness of this body to debate the issues, give all delegates an opportunity to express their concerns, and stick to the task past the 4:30 PM psychological wall was impressive and inspiring. It clearly foreshadows the New Reagan Revolution weve been predicting. Politics matters, again, in the GOP, even against the clear will of the King County-centered pragmatic Elite.
It was evident from the opening of the Platform Report when the grassroots defeated a pragmatic-wing motion to suspend the rules, shut down platform consideration without discussion and simply defer to the unexamined judgment of the State Platform Committee. That motion was only defeated by a small margin. Convention Chair Kirby Wilbur reported it as a 22-vote edge (while our math has it at more like 35 votes) but that little victory seemed to empower grassroots conservatism and the victories grew throughout the day, gaining power and momentum, finally reaching a towering crescendo on the Property Rights Plank.
Wilbur had been a Republican activist who was intimately familiar with the inner working of conventions for many years before becoming a radio talk show host. He was one of the key reasons for the success of the 2006 Convention because he consistently advocated the value of fairness to the minority, and the full consideration of significant issues. His even-handedness and charm went a long way to unify the Party, even while State Central Committee Chair Diane Tebelius was visibly frustrated by her inability to control the tempo of the Convention and the defeat of her positions on several fronts, particularly the Immigration and Property Rights planks. At one point she even left the podium and went to a floor mike to oppose a requirement in the Immigration Section that illegal aliens must return to their own country to apply for any "guest worker" permit. She lost. The Convention closed the loopholes on Immigration emphatically, rejected the embryonic stem-cell research she favored in her Congressional Campaign and adopted a Property Rights Plank that will have Chris Vance rolling over in his political grave.
All in all a wonderful day. Well have a full report when we return from Yakima.

Break out the goodies Bill, this is worth celebrating. (Bill is our Chapter's brewer of fine stuff.)
I've been preaching we were gonna win this. Best regards!
Thanks so much for your report. I head out to the Republican convention in San Antonio at the end of this week.
I'm so glad we have maintained a strong conservative platform in Texas. Often, I wonder about conventions in the not-so-red states.
It was great to read your report. We need to pray that this trend spreads across the country.
Something good in Washington State? Finally.
CONSERVATIVES SHUT OUT OF WA STATE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
What the....?
That was my question too. Just the other day the Ronald Reagan Wing was shut out, in WA. And yet today there is a great victory. I do not understand.
Well done.
A little light of day shined on abusers can do wonders. Once the word got out of what the State Chairman had done, she suddenly found room for the Conservatives. Read it here.

Say WA? Evergreen State ping
FReepmail sionnsar if you want on or off this ping list.
Ping sionnsar if you see a Washington state related thread.
Perhaps we'll see each other there.
Good job, Kirby!
But, when push comes to shove from now until November, can the WAGOP "sow the snap"? Seems like most campaign funding is from RINOs and other limpwrists.
I'm praying. Great report.
Well done!!
We'll see.
Changing the political culture of WA, including that of the state GOP, takes time.
Reagan didn't get nominated the first time he ran after all. The key is that he didn't accept that status quo and "join them". He simply added to his ranks by being consistently a strong advocate for conservatism and finally prevailed.
This is a significant victory, but it's only one battle and there will be undoubtedly setbacks.
Thanks. Love your tagline. Repeal the 17th Amendment!
Thanks so much to those who fought so hard to restore our platform while the rest of us were enjoying the weekend.
Yes, the Reagan Wing WAS shut out of having a booth to distribute literature. But the Reagan Wing, official members and non-official members could not be shut out because we were elected delegates. It was prayer, and the orchestration of God that we had this victory.
The list of victories on the platform include, not only the two immigration amendments, but support of a one strike law for violent sex offenders, opposition to embryonic stem-cell research, support for the suspension and review act on RU-486, and the total repeal of the growth management act that violates property rights. These were all amendments to the Establishment's proposed platform.
But, the Republican officials are already distancing themselves from the platform, so we need to hold their feet to the fire. Help us do it, by telling everyone you know.
There are lots of good things in Washington State. We're just adding more.
