When candidates accused one another of "mudslinging," the late Chicago Tribune columnist Mike Royko insisted it really was "truth-slinging." He meant that, in a democratic election, candidates are most likely to have their past positions and actions revealed by opposition research.
Of course, voters must be careful to make sure an accusation is true. But if one listens carefully, one can discern true positions.
That's how I'm looking at the Democratic primary for governor, whose two top candidates, Treasurer Phil Angelides and Controller Steve Westly, face off June 6.
Angelides is running as a traditional, tax-and-spend Democrat, and Controller Steve Westly is running as a pro-business Democrat who says he would hold the line on taxes and spending. In a May 11 meeting with the Register editorial board, Westly even maintained that, should Democrats nominate him for the November race, he even could be perceived as "running to the right" of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a shoo-in for the GOP nomination.
True enough, Schwarzenegger has been running to the left – way left – since his four-initiative reform plank was wiped out by voters last November. And a top administration and campaign aide is Democrat Susan Kennedy, a former top aide to recalled Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. But it turns out that Westly, too – not just Angelides – isn't exactly a friend of taxpayers.

I am all in favor of California electing far left politicians on a local level. That's where they should be. Put them on the local level, and let the conservatives run the national level.
