No doubt, Phsstpok!

While I was writing that, I thought about going into a dissertation of the end of the war and what led to the peace agreement and then only two years later to the communist victory, and then I thought, nah, it's too off subject. But you're right--there is no disagreement from me.

Allow me to say the Christmas bombings (and mining of North Vietnamese waters to prevent Soviet resupply) devastated the North. It took them then two years to even build the forces to re-engage the South. And then, when push came to shove, and we would have had no choice but to reenter the war or do something.... our will failed. Congress not only voted to keep US forces from coming to the aid of the South, we wouldn't even send them a single bullet or shell to defend themselves. At that moment, the war was lost... In Congress.

We could have bombed the hell out of the concentrated communist forces. It would have been the precursor to the "Highway to Hell" of Desert Storm. The long columns of Soviet style armor would have been like a turkey shoot. But we had had enough of Vietnam so we let our ally lose.

A dark day for the US and one that Kerry, Murtha, et al would no doubt like to try and repeat.

Great analysis and I agree completely with the likely outcome, if we had been allowed to engage the North Vietnamese when they broke their word and the peace treaty.  As you point out Kerry and Murtha would like to repeat this betrayal in the WOT.  That's one reason I agree with Democrats when they say that "Iraq is Vietnam all over again," but then I have to explain to them that the left's "victory" over Nixon in Vietnam was not some glorious thing but was one of the lowest points in the history of western civilization.

There will be a serious reexamination of the entire "peace movement" and the history of the Vietnam war someday that will absolutely eviscerate these people.  Kerry, Fonda and friends will be spat on every time they go out in public.
