Even polygamy wasn't condemned in the Bible till the New Testament. Marriage is a relatively unnatural institution created for one purpose only: to raise children. While the Old Testament is full of people who violated God's Commandments, we also see that they were to some degree or another punished for it. And "Thou shalt not commit adultery" is certainly in there.

Why does Exodus 21:10 & Deuteronomy 21:15-17 sound like a permission slip for polygamy? King David had quite a few wives too (note that he was punished for murdering Uriah, not for the other 4 wives), and he still is the one whose heart is closest to Jesus.
