Angelides, Westly still not connecting with voters

In the primary, Angelides, the state treasurer, leads Westly, the state controller, 35 percent to 32 percent, which is within the poll's margin of error. One-third of likely voters — 33 percent — say they are undecided.

There's a different kind of ambivalence about Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

By a margin of 57 percent to 30 percent, voters say they like his revised budget proposal, with even a plurality of Democrats giving him the benefit of the doubt on that issue. And at least two-thirds of those polled, and 70 percent of likely voters, say they supported the top priorities in Schwarzenegger's budget: boosting funding for schools, paying down debt and repairing levees to guard against flooding.

Similarly, three of the four bond measures Schwarzenegger and the Legislature placed on the November ballot to restore and expand public works are very popular with the voters. Bonds for schools, transportation and flood control all start with the support of more than 60 percent of likely voters.

But voters still have not overcome their displeasure with Schwarzenegger's decision a year ago to slow the growth in education spending to try to balance the budget, and to take on the Democrats.

His job approval rating is at 36 percent to 52 percent among all adults and 42 percent to 48 percent among likely voters.

That low job rating means that the fall election looks like a struggle for Schwarzenegger no matter which Democrat wins the nomination to oppose him. The poll shows both hypothetical match-ups in a dead heat.

When Arnold tried to get conservative measures passed, it brought down his approval rating. THat's why he needs to stay in the middle, to get re-elected, and pass some more reforms -- otherwise the Dems will undo what he did accomplish, e.g. the workers' comp reform.

Angelides scares the hell out of me. If it was him VS Grayout Davis, I'd vote for Davis.
