Gloria James gets community service
Akron Beacon Journal ^ | Andale Gross

Gloria James, the mother of Cavaliers star LeBron James, was sentenced Friday to three days in a driver-intervention program and fined $400 for a January traffic stop.

She also will lose her driver's license for a year and must serve 100 hours of community service. Akron Municipal Judge Lynne Callahan said James can do her community work through the James Family Foundation, the charitable organization she founded in the wake of her son's sports fame.

``Your position has certainly placed you in the public eye, and your life is under a microscope,'' Callahan said in sentencing James. ``I hope this attention will serve, at least, as a signal to you that any inappropriate conduct you take part in is going to have consequences -- very public consequences.

``You've been entrusted with a very important position with the James Family Foundation, a position in which you can do much good,'' the judge said. ``You've got a duty and responsibility to live up to the trust that was given to you in that position and to conduct yourself in a manner that will not reflect poorly on you and on the foundation.''

Gloria James, 38, pleaded no contest to four misdemeanor charges: having physical control of a motor vehicle while intoxicated, disorderly conduct, reckless operation, and speeding.

Is that why Patches Kennedy got off so easily? His life is under a microscope, too.

When LeBron "graduated" from high school, his mother bought him the big Hummer. She was on welfare at the time.

When LeBron signed the truly obscene Nike contract, he was wearing a T-shirt.

This low class loser ought to pay back every cent of state aid now, and buy her kid a proper suit. Oh wait, the NBA millionaires want the Commissioner to buy them decent clothes.
The NBA is the crown jewel in the thug culture. One look at Denis Rodman, with or without his drag outfits, is all you need to know about today's NBA. Baseball, it seems, is hurrying to catch up. For every one Curt Schilling, there are now a dozen Barry Bonds/wannabes.

This is one reason NASCAR's popularity has exploded. People want entertainment and heroes more in line with their beliefs and demographics.

Another is that they want to see Road Rage in a more socially-appropriate setting.

You nailed it.

Regarding the NBA, it has become a chaotic mess of street-ball, and I can't stand watching anymore. The refs allow the players to travel, palm the ball, foul blatantly, and carry on theatrics, and they do nothing. The play has become so physical and rough it rivals the NFL - basketball is (should be) a game of finesse, skill and athletic ability, not brawn. In my opinion, the refs are at least partly to blame for the deterioration of pro basketball into its current trash culture state by their unwillingness to enforce the rules and control the game. It's a joke, and it is trickling all the way down into peewee basketball leagues.

You should try watching some of the pro women's games. I've found them to be much more "true" basketball. And sure, the lesbians love them, but so what? At least the players are not a bunch of criminals.

OK ... just looked it up, he was born in 1984, so that means she was only 16 when she gave birth to him. Sigh...

James can do her community work through the James Family Foundation

I take this to mean she can go sit behind a big desk in a luxury office and tell people what to do.
