I'm currently working on a dive boat in the Gulf of Mexico with a predominately Mexican crew. They refuse to learn English, so I refuse to learn Spanish. I've even had a couple come up to the bridge and try to give me lessons. I just walk away, and it really pisses them off!
That's what I'm talking about. There are some who go into services who learn English, but a lot who do nanny work, or outside work, or such, simply refuse to learn and try to get you to use their words.
It's a culture whose biggest accomplishment is figuring out how to smuggle its citizens into a better country.
Back in the late 70's I contracted a dive boat out of Santa Barbara CA.
Owner was Cuban exile and all crew from Baja.
Crew was amazing - multi lingual and versed in history and technology.
Boat sank.
So has any respect I might muster for the 'aqui si habla espanol' hoards that now represent mexican foreign policy.
