Mindy McClain has attended the same state-sponsored child-care training program for years.
But this year, when she signed up and paid her $20 fee, she was told that the program, which is funded through the Arizona Department of Economic Security, would be presented in Spanish instead of English for the first time. If she wanted to hear it in English, she would be provided with a translating device.
"I'm like, excuse me ... I don't think so," said McClain, the director of the Children's Center preschool in Yuma.
She and 10 other women demanded their money back and promised not to attend.
"I feel very offended," McClain said.
Since then, the DES has given in to pressure from McClain and a few others, and the program will be held in English, despite the fact that 85 percent of those attending will be Spanish-speaking caregivers, according to Lourdes Encinas, who helped organize the event.
"It's bad enough that with a bachelor's degree, I can't go out and get a well-paying job with benefits I'm qualified for because I don't speak Spanish in my own country," McClain said.
The use of English is not only an issue locally, but also nationally.
Last week in his visit to Yuma, President George W. Bush said one of the five components of his immigration-reform plan would be to encourage immigrants to learn English. Soon afterward, the U.S. Senate approved amendments to an immigration bill that would establish English as America's "national language," a move that has drawn criticism from parts of the Hispanic community.
Also, a group of U.S. House Republicans is pushing to drop a section of the 1965 Voting Rights Act which requires certain states and counties to provide bilingual ballots for voters.

But the Spanish alway translate English place names to Spanish...its Nueva York, Cabo Canaveral...
The other thing is the English language TV channel have the SAP (secondary audio program) but the Spanish language channel , we have 8 over the air in Los Angeles never have English on there SAP...
The funny thing is they play alot of English language movies dubbed in to Spanish...it's not like there's not an English language trak that could play on the SAP to pull a few English speaker in or help their Spanish language viewers learn English

I live in San Diego 20 minutes from the border, I haven't been in Baja for at least 15 years.
If I was a Mexican I would own a home on the beach there and be there every weekend.
I personally would love to be in the situation of these or the last batch of illegals.
In fact I would trade my American citizenship for Mexican right now, which is a choice they don't have to make.

That's what I'm talking about. There are some who go into services who learn English, but a lot who do nanny work, or outside work, or such, simply refuse to learn and try to get you to use their words.
It's a culture whose biggest accomplishment is figuring out how to smuggle its citizens into a better country.
Only problem is the 1000 NO people have negative trade value.
Don't worry. Human traffickers and slave traders have you covered for the illiterate Salvadorians. It's one-way though.

Hey, if they can speak in Spanish, I can speak in Chinese.
If you want faster service, press the Spanish option on phone prompts. The person that answers speaks English just fine and you get to them quicker than waiting for an English operator.
But don't tell anyone. I would not want anyone else to know my little secret.
Here is an idea for everyone. Want to make it difficult for non-English speaking persons, want to counter the spread of the second language?
When prompted, always use the Spanish option. Tie it up. May cause some to start using the English lines - they might actually learn it.
And I can't wait for some operator to tell me I am not allowed to use the Spanish line because I don't speak Spanish. I'll ask them for the Chinese line then.

I think everyone would be shocked at the reaction if the illegals were faced with the choice of only one passport, being locked into being an "American".
We aren't gaining Americans we are simply giving a business and benefit gift to people from around the world.
Multiple citizenship is something I want too.
Back in the late 70's I contracted a dive boat out of Santa Barbara CA.
Owner was Cuban exile and all crew from Baja.
Crew was amazing - multi lingual and versed in history and technology.
Boat sank.
So has any respect I might muster for the 'aqui si habla espanol' hoards that now represent mexican foreign policy.
