He had wounded a large dangerous animal that then ran away.
Morally, he had to notify someone so that the animal didn't go berserk on the next homo sapien he came across.

Was it sort of stupid because he had a felony at the age of 17? Well, yeh, but I respect the fact that he didn't just let a large, dangerous, wounded animal run loose to wreak havoc on some unsuspecting person.
