ISSAQUAH - The Issaquah man who claims he shot a black bear in self-defense near his home Monday night is now under investigation by the Department of Fish and Wildlife for being a felon in possession of a firearm and for hunting a bear out of season.
King County Sheriff's deputies, officers with the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms served a search warrant Wednesday at Aaron Enright's home in the rural High Point neighborhood near Issaquah.
They seized the 10-gauge shotgun he used to shoot the bear, a .22-caliber rifle and .22-caliber ammunition. The search warrant indicates they are seeking evidence that would support a charge of "Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in the First Degree" and "Unlawful Hunt Big Game 2nd Degree: Closed Bear Season."
"It's complete insanity," Enright told us Thursday night.
Enright says that on Monday he thought his black labrador retriever was at his back door so he opened the door to let it in. Instead he stood face to face with a black bear.
He says he backed away from the door and reached for his shotgun, that the bear backed up about 10 feet from the door, then made a move as if it was going to charge at him.
"I'm tracking it and then it turns and I shoot it," said Enright, showing us where he says he stood in his own kitchen when he fired the single shot through the open door. "It turned left and took one step and I shot it."
After the encounter Enright called for help and a Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist tracked the bear to a tree about 100 yards into the woods. That wildlife biologist shot the bear a second time and killed it.
Fish and Wildlife Officer Dan Christensen now officially questions whether Enright was in imminent danger when he shot the bear. He is the officer who sought the search warrant and pursuit of charges against Enright. KOMO 4 News was not able to reach Christensen for comment Thursday night.
Enright was convicted of felony burglary 24 years ago when he was 17 years old. That is the basis for the "unlawful possession of a firearm" accusation.
Enright's record shows that in 1983 he received a three-year deferred sentence. He claims he has since passed background checks to own the shotgun and the rifle that were seized by investigators on Wednesday.
Enright has not at this point been charged with any crime. That will be up to prosecutors to decide.

Many people believe that if you get deferred adjudication the conviction is removed from your files. This is not true. An addition is made to your file showing the conviction was removed. While it means that legally you are not a felon, the original sentence will still show up on your records, and could cost you jobs, etc. This is the law as I understand it in Texas, although laws vary from state to state.
I would consider a 10 guage to be in the heavy weapon category.
I don't have my books w;th me at the moment but I would have to guess that the larger gauges have more powder, more and larger pellets than the smaller gauges.
If he's an NRA member, he could ask for help through their legal defense fund. Not so with that "other" gun group.
If it's a certain critter ( Mexican Gray Wolf), you can end up in federal prison.
So let's see, instead of simply investigating this and coming to a simple determination, they are attempting to contrive things in order to book this guy?
It's heavy enough generally, alright but were it me, I'd prefer a single large caliber bullet rather than "scattershot" for stopping a bear.
We have a .12 ga. stainless steel pump Mossberg and several different loads for it, including slugs.
Slugs I could see being very useful for bear.
Something above .270 would be good, .308 would be better.

It was not long after that experience that a .30-30 and AR15 were added to the obligatory assortment of .22s and the Mossberg.
I didn't say they were totally innocent....but posting 'backup' from Wildlife and Bird web sites really doesn't prove anything because of the bias. Down here in Florida, our infamous Florida Wildlife Commission tried to get a law passed to be able to shoot all the wild cats legally....they were also caught on tape saying they can't wait to get out there and blow them away. Lovely bunch of people who also shot that tiger Bobo for no reason.
Cats will kill a bird, a mole a rat if hungry. I also saw a hawk in my own back yard not a month ago eating a dove alive. PS. How often do you spray your backyard or trees or ponds with chemicals? Down here in florida they spray mosquito repellant from air planes twice a years....I see dead birds under trees the next morning.

My issue is with the felon and the guns. I'm ready willing and able to shoot and kill a dog if I have to in my neighborhood that is threatening the cats....just give me a reason.

It's BAD to kill a bear threatening a human life but it's GOOD to kill any dog who may or may not actually be a threat to *your* cats.
