Senate confirms Kavanaugh for seat on federal appellate court (Vote: 57 - 36)

CAPITOL HILL A conservative nominee for the U-S Court of Appeals in Washington, D-C, has been confirmed by the Senate.

White House aide Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed today by a vote of 57 to 36. He was praised by Republicans but widely opposed by Democrats.

President Bush said Kavanaugh will be "a brilliant, thoughtful and fair-minded judge."

A filibuster threat softened after Democrats were granted a request for a hearing at which Kavanaugh testified. The nominee told Democrats he played no role in the White House formulation of policies on detainees and domestic wiretapping.

Kavanaugh was an assistant to independent counsel Kenneth Starr during the impeachment of President Clinton. He also worked on behalf of the Bush campaign during the election recount in 2000.

Another Democratic delay tactic bites the dust.

People hate to hear it, but if I'm not mistaken, it's Specter who granted the extra hearing, with the expressed purpose being to take away any pretense for a filibuster. The proof is in the pudding and there it is.

Exactly. Specter started the questioning and they were specific questions to Kavanah that he answered "no" to. It took all the Dems ammo away and in effect, the hearing was ended.

As Chairman, Specter is proving to be quite an asset for the conservative cause. He's a very good lawyer, a skilled questioner and smarter than all the Dims.
