We need to repeal the 17th Amendment. Let the states go back to selecting Senators to represent them.
Sounds good to me. Entirely too much "direct democracy" for the good of our Republic. States are no longer represented as individual entities. This is not a good thing.
Do you want them elected by the state legislators, or the people of the state? I like it by the people of the state.
Yes repeal the 17th. This is one thing we can do and start now. Any constitutional scholar know how to start this?
Absolutely. Have you ever wondered who represents the interests of the 50 state governments in Washington? It's not the members of the House of Representatives. They are elected direclty by the people. How about the Senate? No, they are also elected directly by the people ever since the 17th was made law.
State governments have to hire lobbyist to represent them just like any other special interest. States pay dues to groups like the National Conference of State Legislatures and the National Governors' Association. They get in line along with the trade union lobbyist, the ACLU, the big corporations, foreign governments, etc. to prostrate themselves before our royal masters in Washington.
Have you ever wondered why the Senate is so out of touch with the real needs of our country? Why so many federal programs are counter productive at worst, a waste of money at best? Or how the federal government can impose unfunded mandates on State government who then has to increase state taxes to fund it?
If State Legislators still chose the U.S. Senate, our whole nation would be radically different for the better.
I wouldn't trust state legislatures for doing much better.
