Javaris Granger wished his father was there instead of him.
His father was on the phone, urging Granger, 15, to get the gun they used for shooting practice. "Do what you have to do," his father said.
Granger did. He aimed the gun and fired at the violent intruder.
It was 3:30 a.m.
Granger woke with a start, hearing his mother's frantic voice and something slamming against the front window.
He ran out to the dark living room and saw his mother screaming as a man, cursing and muttering, threw a bicycle at the window.
Within seconds, Granger ran into his parents' bedroom, found the safety box, unlocked it and loaded two guns for him and his mother. He ran back to the living room as the intruder threw a bicycle at the door and started kicking it in.
The next moment the man kicked down the door and jumped into the living room, yards from Granger.
"I didn't want to hurt anybody, so I fired off a warning shot," the ninth-grader said.
The intruder didn't leave until four shots later.

I constantly tell my wife. "Never fire a warning shot. When it comes time to pull the trigger, all warnings are over."
I don't think it's odd at all. To be calm and decisive in an emergency situation is generally a good thing. Getting hysterical usually isn't much help.
He probably did tell his kid to shoot the guy. I suspect it was a little hard for the kid to shoot someone with all of the anti-gun brainwashing they have for kids today.
"If you have to shoot, shoot him."
"But, dad, I don't want to kill someone."
"Do what you gotta do, son."
Maybe dad was sitting in traffic? This is Hollywood, after all.
EXactly! We were thinking the same thing. Then, hubby said, "Do you think the family would have been allowed to sue the government for the government-required (safety box) if the lock took too long to open or failed in some way; and someone had been killed by the perp in that same "meantime?"
NOoooooooooooooo.
Did you read the post about Georgia (and Florida hubby said) having a "My Home is My Castle" law? You enter at your own risk, baby... LOVE it!
I guess Holly-weird is Holly-weird, whether it is Florida or California. I haven't been to FL in awhile, I guess I forgot about the 24 hr visiting policy in the area hospitals...
teaching the wife to properly handle the 9 is a good idea even if you discourage her thinking of it as a self defense tool. If a situation does arise - she may change her mind, and the gun would be a real liability in untrained hands
I hope not. After reading the full story, I don't think the guy has much cause to sue the kid or his family. He has a long criminal history, and apparently attacked a police officer the day before he tried this home invasion. If he was stupid enough to sue, I think the case would be tossed pretty quickly.
It's probably better that the mom did leave the room and hide with the younger kids. Her son didn't need to deal with the home invader and his hysterical mom. Her hysteria would have distracted him from the bad guy and this could have ended badly, had that occurred.
The Sun-Sentinal reporter sounds so disappointed.
Some hospitals allow visitors to stay in the room of a patient who is critically ill, or one who is in for chemo. It sounds weird at first, but there are occasions when a visitor would be in a patient's room at that hour.
A little harsh on the mom. At 15, there was NO WAY my mom could have done a better job than me defending against an attack like that.
My thoughts too
Might be best for the kid though.
"Nice story, but who goes to visit a friend at a hospital at 3:30 in the morning?"
I would imagine, anyone who lives five or six hours from the hospital and wants to be home in time for dinner.
The article doesn't specify what hospital or location so that was what first came to mind for me.
Not in Florida.
That's why a reel gun is more appropriate for home defense in handguns. While I prefer a double stack of HydraShok .45, a 'pick it up, point it, and pull the trigger' is more dependable in a tense situation.
I have a problem with this...: ) <<< me
Jack Bauer would be proud.
