In the 50's and early 60's the USAF flew to that area to buy chimpanzees for use in the medical experiments. The USAF veterinarians and technicians had to tend to them as they brought them back. They knew then there was a Simian Immunodeficiency virus...along with Herpes "B" viruses that was transmissible to humans. The SIV was hypothesized transmittable because of the cell lines contaminated with that virus while making vaccines (yes, we have been vaccinated with vaccines grown on chimpanzee kidney cells that were co infected with the SIV). This study is further confirmation of what was suspected years ago.
