Regarding the view that the bill will not pass the House, Bush today impounded the documentation obtained by the FBI from Congressman Jefferson's office. Hastert seems awfully strident in trying to get them back and not establishing a precedent of the Executive Branch executing a search warrant on a House of Representatives office. Could it be that Bush would let it be known indirectly that if he were to get an acceptable Immigration Reform bill, that the search warrant issue would be worked out acceptably for Hastert?? Sounds pparanoid, but Bush seems to want this bill more than almost anything else.

That's precisely what is going on.

Either Hastert is a good little boy, and bends over, or...big bad Alberto "El Mexicano Grande" Gonzalez trumps up some charges.

Doesn't sound the least bit paranoid. It is something I hadn't thought about, and it makes perfect sense. When I read about Bush putting the 45-day clamp on the papers, it made me wonder what was going on. Figured he must be wanting to make some deals on all the thievery going on. And it's another question whether he's got something honest or dishonest up his sleeve...
