Protesters greet Fox (Yakima WA)

It didn't take long for the veneer to wear off. Moments after Mexican President Vicente Fox's motorcade passed by, some in the group let loose.

"Go home, Fox!" a protester shouted.

"And take them with you!" another screamed.

By "them," the protesters were referring to illegal immigrants, one of the nation's hottest hot-buttons in recent memory.

The protesters, which Yakima police said numbered about 80, jeered the motorcade from a carefully restricted rally site.

They held aloft a wide variety of signs with messages including "Fine Those Who Hire Illegals" and "Don't export your poverty to America." Many waved American flags.

But counter-demonstrator Tony Sandoval, former chairman of the Yakima County Democratic Central Committee, wasn't buying the group's arguments, and he let anyone within earshot know it.

Using a a boom box slung over his shoulder, Sandoval blared a Spanish-language talk radio station over the crowd. Several protesters demanded he turn it down. He wouldn't, which almost led to blows.

After Fox's motorcade sped by, barbs and insults escalated to a nose-to-nose confrontation between Sandoval and a protester. Police hovered nearby, preventing tensions from boiling over.

The protester, Mike Dickey of Yakima, said he came to the rally because he's worried about the scale of the immigration problem.

"I have no problem with immigration. It's the illegals that are flooding in that's the problem," Dickey said. "How big a heart are you supposed to have?"

On Fox's return trip to the airport, the protesters got a second opportunity to shout and jeer the motorcade. Afterward, some of the protesters said they were sure they saw Fox peering out the window of a green SUV.

A response like this to a legitimate protest will only do harm to the cause of the illegal Mexicans and others. They are showing their belligerence towards Americans and the crass Third World mentality that they bring here with them. I look forward to the day when our immigration laws are upheld by our leaders. The present illegal immigration policies of open borders and mass amnesty for illegals is born of utter selfishness in the business/commerce world and is being upheld by the President and the Senate simply because they provide a temporary boost to the economy.

Fox is up here hoping to get in on the amnesty deal, too.
