The next clarification from ABC: Whether Hastert is "in the mix" depends upon what the meaning of the word "the" is.
This second denial was at midnight Wednesday.
On Thursday morning's 7 AM national radio broadcast Brian Ross was still reporting on Hastert being investigated. At the end a brief remark was made about Justice Department denials.
ABC is not backing down.
I can see some wiggle room in there actually.
If the DOJ says that Hastert's not under investigation by anyone for anything, then I'd call that a blanket denial. Then I'd say ABC has something to worry about.

OK. So Hastert is NOT under investigation. We Got that. In about three stories and three threads now, we got that.
It's not the real story anyway! The real story is Hastert saying that Congress is above the Law! These other stories -- just smoke-screen.
The Other Real Story is "What kind of legs does this story have"? Because IF this story doesn't go away, and go away quickly, Hastert will be gone as Speaker before July 4th.
Oh, pshaw. I think it moe likely that Brian Ross will be gone by July 4th.
ABC doesn't make any pretense of reporting the truth anymore; they just make stuff up.
Oh "pshaw"? I LIKE that. And if Ross is gone -- well that won't effect me In The Least.
But the Other part of this story -- Hastert has just taken the heat of Jefferson, and focused the story on himself, and it's Incredibly Stupid!
However, barring something else, he will remain in his position. He is well-lliked by a lot of the Representatives, and theirs is the only opinion that matters for keeping him as Speaker.
