Many years ago I was a war gamer.

I still am something of a wargamer. Never went to any of the meetings or anything, as I wasn't that serious. But I met a few of the types you're talking about. They were definitely pegging a 9.6 on my weird-o-meter.

I enjoyed the wargames, and thought I was pretty good. And, as a hobbiest, I probably was.

But, to some of those guys the gaming was their whole life. No job, no girlfriends, nothing (or very little) outside of the games.

They couldn't be beaten, of course, in their games of choice. But, that was because they had dedicated their entire existence to them.
