Police raid science fiction sex cult
Daily Telegraph ^ | 5/18/06

Durham Police are investigating a sex slavery sect operating in a north-eastern suburban town, whose members model their sado-masochistic relationships on a series of 1960s science fiction novels.

The suburban home where Kaotians gather

The bizarre cult came to light when police raided an address in Darlington after complaints that a woman was being held against her will.

But it transpired that the Canadian concerned was a willing participant and police had no grounds to act against the so-called Kaotians sect.

It is understood the 29-year-old had voluntarily attended the sect after an internet chat, but later contacted a friend in America, who then contacted police, saying she wanted to leave but couldn't as she had burned her passport.

Police helped to arrange her return home, but a spokesman said there was no criminal activity discovered and that people involved were all "consenting adults".

Officers also investigated claims by a man in Essex that his 18-year-old son had joined the quasi-medieval sect, but police spoke to the teenager and he confirmed he was at the property voluntarily and police said they again had no grounds to get involved.

The Kaotians are a splinter group of the Goreans, which according to estimates number 25,000 followers nationwide.

Both groups base their slavery and dominance beliefs on a series of novels written by John Norman, an American philosophy academic. The Chronicles of Gor depict a society, called the land of Gor, which is divided into castes, and where women are kept as slaves.

Fascination in the international sect has grown since the advent of the internet.

Lee Thompson, 31, lives at the address that was investigated, and describes himself as a master who trains slaves, and that while they must cook and clean as part of their duties, there is an element of sexual domination.

In an interview with the Northern Echo, Mr Thompson, said: "I have been called sick but I don't think what I do is bad.

"There's no reason for people to be afraid of me. I'd die before I see anyone get hurt."

Mr Thompson, who was once banned from one shop for turning up with a girl on a leash, said that as many as 350 followers regularly meet in pubs and clubs around the North East, in an area from Berwick to York.

Mr Thompson, who has been a follower for 15 years, and says he has enjoyed slave relationships with about eight girls, added: "It works on the system that some women have a desire to serve.

"Most people think it is a very sexual thing, but it is about every action that they make, they do it for their master."

I worked for Game Designers Workshop - proofread the game booklets and text on the box and cover art for the Europa series, Traveller series, Twilight 2000 series, etc.

So it was YOUR fault!

Thanks. It looks like a mixture of harmless and ICK, depending on who's involved. I'll look some more before I push a panic button and get her dad involved :-).

Just apply your tag line and that will explain everything........

and if it doesn't then those that don't understand it need to go hide somewhere. Perhaps far, far away........

That is too funny! No, the remote is actually on the floor next to the mattress. It's just a teensy little remote for the Bose.

I'm an engineer, so these things are of interest to me. The medication was supposed to help with that but so far, no dice.

* If you don't know what a "Furry" is, you don't want to know. Trust me

Does it have anything to do with European women?

Talk about biter bit!

I think that the Asimov story you're thinking of is "Sucker Bait" :)

Some of the earlier Gor books were actually fairly entertaining, and there was a background story that was at least faintly interesting (Gor is a planet in Earth's orbit that we can't see, you see, because it's always on the other side of the sun. Some nice aliens run Gor, but some evil aliens are trying to take it over. The nice aliens and some of the humans on Gor are trying to stop the evil aliens. They occasionally swipe women from Earth to keep the supply of slaves up. Other than the slave angle, they were similar to Burroughs but not as entertaining).... Anything after the eighth or ninth book in the series was completely unreadable, with page after page of female slave subjugation scenes interrupted occasionally by some minor plot advancement.

I always thought the Spider Robinson quote referred to the Richard Blade books, some of which I had the misfortune to read long ago - they made Norman's books look like Shakespeare.

That's because the early stories were 50-60% plot and the later ones were about 5% plot. It was really annoying to read 500 pages and get almost nowhere (in recent years, Robert Jordan has fallen into a similar trap).

For an absolutely classic, dead-on parody of John Norman's writing style, check out Houseplants of Gor. ;)

"Buckets of Gor"

LOL! That was the title of a group costume at the 1974 world SF Convention in Washington, DC.

At about the same time, my friends and I got drunk at a party and wrote a parody we called "Housewives of Ghor." The writing was remarkably easy to satirize.

Twilight 2000 and Traveller were RPGs. The Europa series was essentially a board game..... that would cover your whole entire living room floor and THEN some! :-)

My favorite GDW game that the average person can absorb and play is Campaign Trail. It was an award-winning game when it was released. I have the game and now play it with my teenage kids from time to time.

Working at GDW, located in a college town (Bloomington/Normal) in central Illinois, was a ton of fun - imagine working with a bunch of 25-35 yr. old geniuses on a daily basis with a then-un-heard-of VERY casual dress code (how many office "corporate HQ" jobs did you know of back in the early 1980's that allowed t-shirts and shorts or jeans?!).

But I met my future husband at a party that I went to on a fluke, fell in love and ended up moving away to the "big city". My sister's husband's college roommate was one of the GDW owner-partners. One of the other designers (who will remain nameless on this thread - at least in public ;-) apparently had the hots for me and was heartbroken when I moved away.

It was a fun job "gig" while it lasted, but I made other choices and moved on. I did however manage to hang onto quite a bit of product - I have many of the Traveller modules and the original Twilight 2000 boxed set plus several of the first modules that I worked on. Maybe an eBay sale is in my future?! ;-)

Apparently somebody else has the same basic idea?!

And so does this guy.

Ping for my response with some more GDW "history" immediately above. I should have included you in my reply list.

NOT for use in homes with cats.

OR dogs. I knew of many gamers whom I'd meet while working the GDW booth at GameCons (Origins?!) who'd confess to taking up their whole basement floor with the GDW Europa series maps. No dogs allowed in the game basement either! :-)

Some of these gamers looked terrible; well, they had that awful pasty gray skin - like they'd been in their basements for weeks and only came up for air when they knew a new module or box set was being released!!! ;-)
