The problem is that the S&M and fetish crowd has found their way into science fiction fandom and things have gotten a lot kinkier in the past decade or two. Anime fans and the Furries* (*shudder*) contributed, too..
* If you don't know what a "Furry" is, you don't want to know. Trust me. You do not want to know. And don't look it up on the web, either. If you do, and have nightmares, don't blame me. You've been warned.

LOL! My innocent brother, who should have known better, attended a "furry" convention in Southern California a couple of years ago. Oddly enough he was a former devotee of the Gor books who thought he'd seen it all...all he'd say about it afterwards was "I never want to have sex again for the rest of my life..."

Thanks.
Needless to say, I can never watch one of those LOTR movies.

My son participates in role playing games but has nothing but contempt for the folks who have to dress up and take it to the real world. He calls them Larpers... The good thing about LARP players is that they make the wargamers at gaming conventions seem like the sane and social type of people. (Only a month and a week until Origins.)

I guess I shouldn't talk. I think Billy Boyd (Pippin) is a cutie.
But at least he could beat up Frodo.

I once read that an unnamed science-fiction author wrote a book with the intention of proving there was no bookso bad it couldn't be sold. Not only did he sell it, but he sold over two dozen sequels (~20 years ago). Sound familiar?Spider Robinson made that claim in one of the Callahan books, I've been twisting my little mind to figure out who it was/is. You think John Norman? Really?

I doubt you would fit in with the group.

There's a huge community of SNL-type goth quasi-vampires in my neighborhood. (ew.) My son does some of the werewolf and seventh sea games. It was interesting to see a 6 '4 sixteen year old acting out Captain Blood for entertainment as a harmless past time, but he turned twenty last week and now it's starting to be a little creepy.
He's terrified of the skanky women who are constantly coming on to him at work. I apparently did too good a job reinforcing that old "sex = babies = adult responsibilities" formula. But these "role players" just don't seem to have clue.

Inside it is the home of the 'Kaotians' a sex-slave cult based in the north of England with over 350 members.
Must be a long house to fit 350 people in.

The hairy middle-aged men dressed up like Sailor Moon (Japanese schoolgirl sailor outfits) run a distant second to the Furries for creep factor. As one role-playing blogger calls them: "lawn crappers" (as in having a neighbor who thinks nothing of crapping on his front lawn). They are people that are so creepy that they scare all the nice people away and unfortunately, the geeky hobbies (including role-playing, science fiction fandom, anime, etc.) seem to attract them and are way to accepting of them. Their numbers are growing at science fiction and gaming conventions.

Spider Robinson made that claim in one of the Callahan books, I've been twisting my little mind to figure out who it was/is. You think John Norman? Really?Correct on the source, and yes. I can't prove it, but look at the circumstantial evidence.

Or, as has been with other games ...Change the rules.
We expanded the board by 15 squares each side, and put trenches (4 square long "blocks") wherever we wanted. The engineers could cross a trench of course, so they weren't invincible, but then you'd have to figure out how to defend them economically.
Opening up the playing field made he basic game much more challenging. We didn't, as I recall, change many other rules, but perhaps you can think of some improvements too.
