I won't go as far as rejoicing the man's death, but he certainly distinguished himself as a cheap-shot artist with his comment to VP Quayle.

"I won't go as far as rejoicing the man's death, but he certainly distinguished himself as a cheap-shot artist with his comment to VP Quayle."

His comment: "You're no Jack Kennedy" should have been responded to by Quale with: "You're right Senator, I never he-whored around on my wife like JFK did."

Ironically enough, he apologized afterward to Quayle, but that part was never really reported. (I think I read that either in Quayle's book or in one conservative newspaper account. I can't really remember the source.)

The most interesting thing about the Quayle comment was that it was a lie. Bentsen was not close to JFK in any way. He was just a fellow senator and nothing more. It was a truly shameless cheap shot.

That was low yet the liberal media keep playing it as his "best moment".

Quayle was under strict orders from the Bush 41 campaign to be very respectful to Bentson.

They knew that no matter what happened unless Quayle came off too aggressive, then Bush and Quayle would win. But biting his tongue cost Quayle his future in the party.

I would have loved to hear Quayle shoot back. You are right. I am not a John Fitzgerald Kennedy. But you certainly sound like an LBJ to me. If you get elected will you promise they will never shout at you "Hey Hey Bentson say... how many boys did you kill today?'
