Just heard back from a friend who climbed Cho Oyu as part of a guided group. He said they talked about the issue and agreed to help anyone in the group in need, even if they had to lose a chance at the summit. There was apparently nothing in writing.

He is a total peak bagger, but a good guy I have climbed with before. My guess is that he would do everything possible to get someone off the mountain. That's the type you want on your rope.

Thanks, that's actually nice to know to this flatlander. Is each climber in a group required to carry O, or just one member? I'd imagine all that survival equipment you guys have to lug up to those very high peaks get awfully heavy the farther up you go.

I've got a dumb question for you climbers. Would a Gamow or Certec bag have helped this guy? Are such enclosures ever used above Base Camp?
