Public vs. Private: Rethinking the Debate after the Duke Scandal (barf alert)
The Washington Post ^ | May 22, 2006 | Fran Brenn

Posted on 05/22/2006 7:49:22 AM PDT by RecallMoran

I calculated what we'd have to sacrifice to afford private school for all three kids, at least for high school. I casually mentioned any negative story I'd heard about our local public middle and high schools. In the midst of my stealthy onslaught, the Duke lacrosse scandal broke, and I beat a hasty retreat. The newspapers and coffee klatches were abuzz with stories about privileged white kids run amok. Many of these kids came from some of the Washington area's top private schools. Even if no crime occurred, this story seemed to confirm all of my gut-level fears about private schools: They breed a sense of entitlement and superiority; private-school kids believe they're not held to the same standards as the rest of the masses; it might just turn my kids into people I don't really like.

D.C. spends record amounts of TAX money per student, about the same as the private schools mentioned spend in tuition. I guess the public school educated Kim and Crystal's epithet about "limp dicks" doesn't count.

Even if no crime occured they're guilty anyway according to the author. Why? They're rich white kids.

This could be "Exhibit A" in my presentation of why I don't bother arguing with liberals.

Even if I weren't abducted by aliens I still think they sucked out my brain. You're right...why even bother, you can't really argue with a FEELING.

Thanks but I didn't post the article. I agree it needs the barf alert though.

If you raised your kids with the right values and morals in the first place then you wouldn't be so worried about them being influenced so easily.

They aren't held to the same standards..Apparently they can NOT rape a hooker and then be arrested for it.

Fran, do sane people seek to bolster their imaginary fears?

Cordially,

#3 & 4, I like your response!...ditto

This woman's 'reverse snobbery' is still...snobbery!

Good chance her own children will become 'mini-me' with their own brand of mama's snobbery.

It's all in the attitude.

The author made all of the politically correct statements. However, she did not say where she will send her children. The reason she did not say is simple. She knows the public school system in the DC area is a damn mess and financial scandal. It is not politically correct to mention this. The inner city schools of DC are primary school for crime and murder. She is sending her kids to private school because she loves them. She will not say it.

Strange that the Left showed no concern about assumptions of entitlement and superiority by the rich and powerful when Juanita Broaddrick made her allegations.

You misunderstood my comment.

The author is worried excessively about his/her "child" becoming a spoiled rich kid who expects certain privileges. What the author doesn't understand is that that particular trait/outlook will be shaped way before college, by their rearing.

No I understood. I was just adding that when someone says "they aren't held to the same standards" they think they mean that the private school "elite" get away with more. I am suggesting that they actually, in today's climate, get away with less because of people like this author. She says "even if no crime was committed" and then proceeds to attack the players. She also mentions in the article how they threw out racial slurs. She fails to include the fact that the stripper/hookers also threw out racial slurs. So which is it? Elite private school snots throw out racial slurs because of the rarified air at their campuses or hooker/strippers throw out racial slurs because.... There are different standards. These guys most likely didn't commit a crime but are being excoriated in the press because they went to private schools, or daddy is a k-street lawyer, or they "look preppy", or whatever in an attempt to make sure no one thinks they are innocent. They can never be innocent or rape if they answered a slur with a slur. Different standards for different people.

The great unspoken aspect of the Duke Lacrosse case is that it points out a generational divide. The lacrosse team players grew up on rap. That is the grew up hearing racial name calling and hearing women called "rap" names etc.

Nifong and this mom clearly are offended by that. Maybe they have never actually heard rap music. Maybe they have never actually been around young African-Americans playing sports or other informal situations where such language is sometimes common place. Maybe they have not heard how young Americans of all races informally use the terms of rap about each other and particularly those negative towards women. [Actually I suspect Nifong might know this and is being a hypocrit in yet another dimension, but I don't know anything about the author of the essay.] Maybe they don't know about movies/songs about how tough it is to be a pimp?

So I have a clue for the mom that wrote this article. If you hung out with young people today, you would hear such speech, whether they went to private or public schools. You would probably hear more of it if they went to public schools.

No surprisingly after 40 years of Afrimative Action, 40 years of pop culture telling kids of African-American subculture being cool, white teens don't understand that while you can drop f-bombs all over the placed, you will greatly offend PC liberals if you are white and use some words you hear from African-American rap artists.
