My personal feeling is that it is driven by pure greed. Follow the money. Who (which lobbyists) are actively paying the Pubs (and Dum-o-crats for that matter) to see to it that this country is stockpiled with "cheap" labor.

If you imagine there is a "scale" and sovereignty is on one side...and socialism is on the other side....we are definitely at the "tipping point". Instead of this scale listing 15 degrees to port or 15 degrees to starboard...it is now ready to roll over.

My point about the 10 ton elephant tiptoeing around the oval office is that people like MHJohnnie while his heart is in the right place...still refuse to see the obvious. If GWB grants these people a "pathway to citizenship" this number of people multiplied by 16 will absolutely be the demise of the Republican party. Any sane person who steps back from the nonsense, screaming and name calling in these threads and takes a reasoned look at these figures simply can not deny it.

I do not believe there is one answer to why GWB is so insistent on selling our sovereignty...it appears like there are many forces at play.

Another really big issue to consider is this:
Can you imagine if the borders are not secured what will happen in 10 years?

AFTER we have made these people "legal"...AFTER they have begun to import more people who are largely unschooled and are only suitable for the most menial of jobs....what happens when 15 million, or 20 million MORE illegals stroll in across our border?
If there is no border enforcement...and if there is no workplace / employment enforcement. These people we we will soon be granting "amnesty" to , will be without jobs....

They will be replaced by the new group of illegals coming across. Can you begin to fathom the strain on social services / schooling / housing / hospitals/ prisons...all of which are paid for by the taxpayer. Our tax rate will shoot right past that of the UK and the worst of the Uro-peee-on socialist crap-holes.

It is for this reason that in MY OPINION....it really does not matter who occupies the white house in the next term....IF this SHAMNESTY is made into law. There will be such a tidal wave of humanity piled on to the backs of American tax payers that we're not likely to be able to come up for air. Ever. I feel sorry for those hard core b-bots....they can't see the forest because of the trees.

Your characterization of the illegals who are here, and the millions upon millions more who are poised to come, is, I think, correct: unschooled, unskilled people who will ultimately be a huge drain on our tax payer supported social, "entitlement" programs.
I have heard several people on at least two recent talk shows say that studies(I cannot quote who or what studies) show that, contrary to what some have said, these illegals, and their hangers-on family members, WILL NOT save or delay the imperiled Social Security system. Quite the contrary.
So, that arguement can be completely shot down.

The other reality seems to me to be that this will give the Democrats control of the country for forever. I don't see how it can be any other way.

Like you, I cannot fathom how Bush supporters of his recent proposal fail to see that.

How does President Bush fail to see that?
What America does he want his daugthers and their children to live in?!
