Oh, it goes back much further than that. We should have turned Iran into a burnt crisp when they took the hostages, but Jimmah preferred to treat those early terrorists as if they were actually legitimate.

Absolutely. If it had been Reagan instead of Carter, and he had bombed the ever lovin' daylights out of them that very day...

Jimmy Carter is the ultimate coward. I personally believe that he is the model for the "President Logan" on TV's "24" who is a spineless weasel puppet. If you've watched this season, you just know that it's Carter to a tee.

I had quite an interesting discussion about this very topic last night at a dinner. This great guy, one of the 8 documented good liberals(!) understands but rejects Carter as worst POTUS. His pick is Harry Truman who ignored Churchill's warnings and then pleadings, to use the threat of the power of nuclear bombs to secure the world from anyone else ever developing a nuclear bomb program. In light of L'il Kim in NK, Crazy Mo in Iran, and the Paki nation as a whole, I found very little room to argue.

If you see General Tommy Frank's speech to the NRA from yesterday put up on this board, I respectfully suggest it as an excellent overview of what we face as a civilization.
Tommy sure gets it!

Actually, a story ran in Soldier of Fortune about 10 years ago that was based on interviews with a former Air Force intelligence officer who was privy to the operational planning for Charlie Beckwith's Desert One mission. It was very, very heavy and very severe. It involved the use of multiple daisy cutters on the "instant mobs" of "students" occupying the embassy and billeted nearby to protect it, multiple AC-130 gunships, flights of F-111's dumping rackloads of Snakeye, Rockeye, and other exotica on the heads of the militants, and just an unholy massacre of the bad guys.

The Achilles heel of the operation was Carter's obsession with micromanagement (a personality-based flaw that even liberals concede) that loused up Beckwith's timing and coordination and led to the mission's falling afoul of the sandstorm that eventually sank it. The White House interfered with the timing of the operation so that the civilian leadership could be assured that satellites would be "up" so that they could stay on top of the operation in "real time".

FWIW, the AF officer thought that the operation was overdesigned and had too many moving parts anyway, so that it may have been a mercy that the mission failed prior to contact with the Iranians guarding the embassy.
