The Team
One of the very great virtues of our democratic way of life is that our system encourages both individual initiative and group participation. We are a nation of teams. In probably no other country in the world do people belong to so many groups engaged in so many different projects. All of us are members of many teams - our family, our job, our community, our church, our recreational activity, our social circle, and many others.. Teamwork is co-operation put into practice. It is a positive attitude of mind that combines individual initiative with respect for others and an appreciation of the fact that one fouled-up play can spoil the efforts of the group. .. Teamwork is the ability to follow as well as to lead. It is the knack of knowing how to be useful whether we are a humble substitute or the star performer. Everything we do in a group affects all the other members. If we let George do it, we can become the silent saboteurs of daily living... Teamwork is loyalty. It is believing in your job, your group, your community. We all know the person who takes a cynical attitude: Its a racket, whats the use, Somebody will do it, or Nobody ever did anything for me ... We often hear people take these negative attitudes about groups with whom they are unable to co-operate. You will hear them say that such a group is a clique and that it does not do any good to try to work with them. If we set our own goals and learn when to take advice and when to give it, we will soon become a member of the clique . . . Teamwork, above all, is the art of being unselfish. When we learn to put the group first, we will find both pleasure and profit for ourselves. Neither province, parish, nor nation; neighborhood, family, nor individual, can life profitably in exclusion from the rest of the world. Ralph Tyler Flewelling Chaplain Mitch Schranz

Unchained By The Cross
READ: Matthew 27:33-50
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 n ancient Greek mythology, the hero Prometheus was captured and chained to a mountain peak, where he was sentenced to stay forever. Each day, a giant eagle arrived to feast on his liver. Hermes came to him and said, Do not hope for an end to your suffering until a god appears as your substitute in torment, ready to descend for you into the realm of Hades. According to the myth, this was done by the wise and just god Chiron, who sacrificed himself for Prometheus and delivered him from torment.
This story is in some ways a picture of what happened for us the day Jesus died on the cross. Mankind was bound by sin, and there was no hope of escape unless God took our place. And thats exactly what happened. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on our behalf and paid the penalty for our sin. He provided a way of releasing us from eternal punishment. Were we to write for a thousand days, we still could not express the meaning of Christs sacrifice for the sins of mankind. Its full significance is beyond our comprehension.
Have you confessed your sin and asked Jesus Christ to be your personal Savior? If not, theres no better time than today. Trust in Him, and you will know what it means to be unchained by the cross. David C. Egner
Amazing thought, that God in flesh
Would take my place and bear my sin;
That I, a guilty, death-doomed soul,
Eternal life might win. Anon

I don't recall if it was 1966 or '67, but my GIB (guy in back) came into a mid-morning briefing on what I learned was a Jewish holiday, sat down next to me and said that he just saw a protestant chaplain conducting a service for a group of Jewish officers and enlisted guys in the church hut. Although on a subconscious level I knew it was consistent with American life, but that was the first time I overtly recognized that only in a sublimely tolerant, multicultural and diverse society could such an anomalous event take place. With the exception of the British, I can't imagine that ever happening in any other nation's armed force in the field.
